Liverpool drew against Arsenal on Sunday as they took another step towards the end of the season.

The Reds have already wrapped up the Premier League title and for a time it looked as if they were ready to send a statement to likely runners-up Arsenal.

Two early goals looked to have put Liverpool out of reach, while they could quite easily have pulled further ahead by half-time.

Although Arsenal came back into it in the second-half, the lasting memory of Sunday’s game, aside from the booing of Trent Alexander-Arnold, should be those opening 25 minutes.

The man who got the scoring underway was Cody Gakpo, who nodded home his 18th goal of a productive season.

And after getting on the end of Andy Robertson’s cross, Gakpo equalled an impressive Anfield record held by Mohamed Salah.

Cody Gakpo equals Mohamed Salah record

If there was a party atmosphere at Anfield from the start on Sunday, then Gakpo’s goal almost took the roof off.

It was well worked from Curtis Jones and Robertson, to leave the Dutchman with the simple task of heading beyond David Raya.

As it turns out, it was a milestone goal for Gakpo. As per statistician Michael Reid on X, it made the 26-year-old only the second player ever to score in 10 consecutive Anfield starts.

Told about the record while speaking to LFCTV after the game, Gakpo was clearly delighted.

“Only two have done it?! Me and Mo? Okay, that’s amazing!” he smiled.

“To get the record like that, maybe if I score in the last game of the season, hopefully I start! That’s an honour to get that record beside Mo who has so many records, amazing.”

Gakpo ready for end of season party

Gakpo was one of the players visibly upset with the crowd for booing Alexander-Arnold on Sunday. But by the time he faced the cameras, the Netherlands international was all smiles again.

Asked about the positive atmosphere the fans created, Gakpo said he was already looking forward to the title parade on May 26th.

“Hopefully we give them two more wins from our side, I think they deserve to have a great party,” he said. “The last league title was in covid and then I saw the parade already back then. It’s not covid anymore, so I expect a lot!

“I think they deserve that, we fought really hard this season to make that happen and we will have a great party. But then we have to focus again for next season and hopefully get more parties in.”

Hopefully Gakpo can get a start and a goal on the final day of the season against Crystal Palace to make an already special day that little bit more memorable from his point of view.
