What Bayern Munich told their players to do as they tried to convince Florian Wirtz to snub Liverpool and join them

Florian Wirtz to Liverpool is the main story that has dominated headlines throughout the summer transfer window.

The German playmaker looks set to be Liverpool’s record-breaking signing as his Anfield switch edges closer.

Indeed, the negotiations have taken a tad longer than most would have wanted them to, but since the start, Wirtz has told Liverpool that they’re the team he wants to play for.

However, his future could have been very different if Bayern Munich’s players had done what they were told to while they were still in the race for the 22-year-old.

Bayern Munich told their players to become agents to try to convince Florian Wirtz to join them

Bayer Leverkusen have already been ripped apart this summer, with Xabi Alonso moving to Real Madrid and both Jonathan Tah and Jeremie Frimpong already being taken away from the BayArena.

Not only were these three some of the most important figures at the club, but without them, it’s hard to see how Leverkusen will be as competitive as they have been over the last couple of years.

And, as per a report from German outlet CF Bayern Insider, it seems that Bayern tried to get their players to entice Wirtz to make the move to the Allianz before he made his final decision to join Liverpool.

Outside of football, Wirtz is very good friends with Jamal Musiala, but even he chose to give him ‘the space he needed’ in order to make his own decision, the report shared.

Despite Bayern’s desires for their players to convince him, there was not one ‘agent’ within the team that tried to convince the 22-year-old to join them.

The report also adds that there’s still a ‘rivalry’ between the two clubs, so there aren’t many players who are friends between the teams.

Tah was another option considered to try to convince Wirtz, but he still ‘needed time,’ so, in the end, Bayern had no chance of boosting their hopes to sign the attacking midfielder.

Bayern Munich’s loss is Liverpool’s gain as Florian Wirtz’s transfer edges closer

Even though it’s only been a month or so since Liverpool’s initial interest in Wirtz was reported, it feels like it’s taken forever to get to this point.

All the Merseyside outfit’s fans want to see is the attacking midfielder donning the Red of Liverpool and tearing it up for his new team.

Wirtz is already highly regarded as one of the best number 10s in world football, and with players such as Mohamed Salah and Alexis Mac Allister around him, there’s no knowing how good he could become.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess when the transfer will be finalised, but with the speed that things have started to move over the last day or so, it only feels like a matter of time before Wirtz’s Liverpool move is completed.

Here’s hoping that Wirtz can hit the ground running for Arne Slot’s men when the 2025-26 season gets underway.
