Florian Wirtz’s future is something that has dominated the transfer headlines over the last few weeks.

Liverpool are the team that the German has chosen to take the next steps in his career with, as both Manchester City and Bayern Munich missed out on the move.

The 22-year-old was in action for Germany on Wednesday evening, and even though German media didn’t rate Wirtz’s performance that highly, he still bagged himself a goal.

Granted, the move hasn’t yet been sanctioned, with everything now in place aside from the fee that Liverpool want to pay to bring Wirtz to Anfield.

So, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to see fans and pundits already talking about how much of an impact he could have on Arne Slot’s set-up next season.

Jermain Pennant believes Florian Wirtz could be Liverpool’s Kevin De Bruyne

On the face of things, it feels like Wirtz’s transfer to Liverpool is now just a matter of when, not if.

Pundits, fans and journalists have all spoken about how things could end up going for the attacking midfielder, with many believing Liverpool could be about to pull off the signing of the summer.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s Inside Liverpool Podcast, former Everton player Jermain Pennant has given his verdict on what Wirtz’s transfer could mean for Liverpool in the long run.

“If you speak to everyone about him [Wirtz], everyone can only give massive praise,” he said.

“If you’re not a good player or a great player, you don’t get those kinds of praises from every single person.

“It’ll be a statement signing, he could be something like the Kevin De Bruyne of Liverpool.”

Comparing the statistics of Florian Wirtz and Kevin De Bruyne

Seeing as though De Bruyne has been allowed to leave Manchester City upon the expiry of his contract, it’s evident that the Cityzens have a plan in place to fill the gap, with former Liverpool target Rayan Cherki topping their list.

The Belgian has been one of Pep Guardiola’s best players during his time in charge of Man City, with the attacking-midfielder set to earn a statue outside of the Etihad.

Granted, Wirtz didn’t achieve those sorts of levels at Bayer Leverkusen as he’s still only 22 years old, but looking at his performances throughout the 2024-25 campaign, he’s clearly been one of Xabi Alonso’s key men.

The best seasons from Florian Wirtz and Kevin De Bruyne in recent years.

When looking back at one of De Bruyne’s best-ever Premier League seasons, the resemblance in numbers is uncanny.

Indeed, the Bundesliga and Premier League have different skill levels, but the fact that Wirtz was 22 and putting out these sorts of numbers is an achievement in itself.

Of course, only time will tell whether Wirtz will be able to live up to a similar standard that De Bruyne showed when leaving the Bundesliga, but if he does, Liverpool could be onto a winner.
