Florian Wirtz to Liverpool update emerges amid rumours of potential swap deal for Harvey Elliott

Florian Wirtz’s future has been something of a hot topic over the last few weeks, with Liverpool leading the way for his transfer.

The German could end up being the signing of the summer for Arne Slot, especially since Wirtz is only 22 years old and is already highly regarded as one of the best number 10s in world football.

The numbers he’s put out this season also match up to the statement of him being one of the world’s best.

However, as a fee for Wirtz hasn’t yet been agreed upon despite his desire to make the switch, rumours have started to circulate about what the Anfield outfit could do to try and get his fee down to a more reasonable level.

Harvey Elliott is no longer being considered for a swap deal with Florian Wirtz

Harvey Elliott’s future has been questioned over the last month or so.

The Englishman even shared a cryptic message about his Liverpool future after they lost 3-2 to Brighton in their penultimate game of the campaign.

However, as per a new report from ECHO journalist Paul Gorst, it seems that Elliott is no longer being considered by Bayer Leverkusen, despite their prior interest in the midfielder.

“Yeah, our understanding is that it’s not necessarily being discussed at the moment. It is very much just about establishing a fee for Florian Wirtz,” he said via the Blood Red Podcast.

“I think once you start including players like Harvey Elliott and Quansah, I think that’s when you’re massively in the territory of reducing the fee that you’re paying.

“Those players are worth, you know, X amounts of money, certainly in the case of Elliott, you know, what similar age to Florian Wirtz, all the numbers that he’s accrued at Liverpool, you know, the appearances and goals and assists and whatever else, he’s worth what? 40 million pounds?

“So if he’s been included in the deal, Liverpool certainly are not going to pay 100 million upwards in terms of actual money. So, yeah, at the moment, it is very much just about establishing a fee.”

Liverpool should try to sell Harvey Elliott this summer

There’s no denying that Elliott is a talented player.

The young Englishman was one of Jurgen Klopp’s star boys who often put in a more-than-decent shift when called upon.

Throughout the 2024-25 season, however, Elliott hasn’t been afforded that much of a chance from Slot and with Wirtz more than likely to come in at some point this summer, there will be even less of a chance for him to feature.

Indeed, Elliott can also be used on the right wing rather than his preferred central role, but with Jeremie Frimpong having only just joined, it’s unlikely he’ll get much of a look in there either.

The midfielder will no doubt be worth a pretty penny in today’s market, and with Liverpool being linked with moves for players such as Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Wirtz, some sales will have to be made.

And, with Elliott falling further down the pecking order with the new arrivals, it makes sense for the 22-year-old to exit Anfield this summer.
