Steve Nicol predicts what Arne Slot will do in Liverpool’s remaining four games after winning Premier League

Liverpool secured the Premier League title with four games left to play after smashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 on Sunday.

The Reds are one of the earliest winners in the competition’s history, becoming just the sixth team to taste glory with four or more matches remaining.

Liverpool could even have won it earlier had they not succumbed to a surprise defeat against Fulham three weeks ago.

In the end, though, the timing was perfect. Everything conspired to mean the Reds could celebrate their success at Anfield having dealt with a Spurs team with one eye on the Europa League.

After the enormous celebrations seen on Sunday, many Liverpool fans would perhaps love to see the season end there and then.

But the Reds still have four tricky fixtures left to play. And as they play out those remaining games in a weird kind of limbo, former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has predicted what we’ll see from Arne Slot and his team.

Steve Nicol predicts Liverpool changes

Looking at their fixtures, it’s a good job Liverpool tied up the title when they did.

A tough looking trip to Chelsea comes next, before a visit of likely runners-up Arsenal to Anfield.

Liverpool then visit Brighton – never an easy place to go – while the season ends at home against FA Cup finalists Crystal Palace.

Had they needed points from those games, things could have become tense. As it is, Liverpool can breeze through them. And according to Nicol, Slot is about to ring the changes with his team selections.

“That’s exactly what you’re going to see as well,” said the Liverpool legend after being told the Reds could ‘do what they want’ in the last four matches. “Because it’s very difficult when you’ve got nothing on the line.”

“So, you’ll see a lot of changes, you certainly won’t see too many victories. But that doesn’t matter, that’s not what counts. What counts is what they’ve done from the start of the season until now to win the title and they thoroughly deserved it.”

How did Liverpool do after title win in 2019/20?

The earliest ever league win in terms of games played was of course Liverpool’s victory under Jurgen Klopp in 2019/20, when the title was secured with seven matches left.

And, true to Nicol’s prediction, Liverpool proved that it is not easy to re-focus once the job is done.

The Reds won four, drew two and lost two of those last seven games, including a 4-0 thumping at Man City in the match immediately after winning the title.

Liverpool also lost at Arsenal, while a disappointing home draw against Burnley was recorded as well.

As they got used to playing without fans in stadiums things were naturally very different five years ago. But with some tricky fixtures to come, it would be a surprise if Liverpool were firing on all cylinders. As Nicol says, though, that hardly matters now.
