Liverpool’s plan to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold has gone up in flames as ‘special’ youngster ruins chance

Liverpool’s to-do list for this summer’s transfer market already has plenty written on it.

The Reds look likely to be busy in the window as they aim to build on what is set to a Premier League-winning campaign.

Centre-forward and left-back are the early areas of focus, with clear improvements possible to make Liverpool even stronger next season. Beyond those two positions, though, there is plenty more to do besides.

One thing that is likely to be addressed is the need for a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Although some fans have convinced themselves that Trent is staying, it looks more than likely that the Scouser will leave for Real Madrid.

Conor Bradley is set to step up and become Liverpool’s first choice right-back, but the Reds will need to sign someone else who can compete or at the very least play back-up to Bradley.

But if things had gone to plan, Liverpool would already have that player at the club. In another world, the 2025/26 season would have been Calvin Ramsay’s chance to shine.

Calvin Ramsay misses Liverpool chance

Back when Ramsay was signed in 2022, he was brought in with the remit of playing back-up to Alexander-Arnold, with the possibility of succeeding him in the future.

Reports at the time claimed that Jurgen Klopp thought Ramsay could one day replace Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool and that was certainly the long-term aim.

At the time the young Scotsman was brought in, Bradley had just been sent out on-loan to Bolton in League One. It was clear Ramsay was the higher rated of the two.

But in an opening season where Ramsay featured just twice for the Liverpool first-team, Bradley excelled at Bolton. As injuries then continued to plague the former, the latter established himself in the senior squad.

With Bradley now in-line to take over duties from Trent, Liverpool are back in the market for another young right-back who can compete alongside him.

Had everything worked as it should have done, they wouldn’t have needed to make a signing at all, Ramsay would have been able to step in. With the two talented 21-year-old’s fighting for the starting spot, Liverpool would have been in a good place. Alas, Ramsay is now nowhere near being handed that role.

Ramsay must move on from Liverpool

Ramsay has been so unfortunate since joining Liverpool. The Scotland international was flagged as having a problem during his medical and although he was signed anyway, he has never been able to get back on track.

A loan move to Kilmarnock in January has seen Ramsay make only one start and it’s clear that he will not make the grade at Anfield.

Ramsay was seen as being ‘special‘ when he was signed and there is obviously a good player in there. But having missed this golden chance to make the breakthrough at Liverpool, it is unlikely to now ever arrive.

Instead, Ramsay should look to get his career back on track elsewhere. If he can get fit and impress Slot in pre-season then you never know what can happen, but it looks best for everyone if a transfer is sought this summer.

Bradley and Ramsay competing for the right-back slot was a nice plan for Liverpool. But, unfortunately, it will never become a reality.
