Aberdeen legend Willie Miller has claimed that Liverpool are about to sign a ‘special’ talent in Calvin Ramsay.
Speaking to The Press and Journal, Miller insisted that Liverpool’s newest signing can go right to the top.
“Ramsay certainly has the qualities to be a modern type of full back that can play at the highest level,” said the former defender, who played almost 800 times for Aberdeen.
“He has all the tools to be that special player. However it will not be a case of it being handed to him. This is a fabulous opportunity for Ramsay and he has to be confident enough to grab it and make the most of it.
“Ramsay looks a confident player and young man. He has to take that confidence and ability and weld them together to take this chance of a lifetime as far as it can possibly go.”
That sounds like a very promising assessment of Ramsay from a man who must have watched plenty of him.
Ramsay’s loan dilemma
Given the qualities that Ramsay has, it does seem a predicament for Liverpool as to whether they should loan him out.
Obviously, you want a new signing to acclimatise to the club and the playing style. That will only happen from being in and around the place day-in-day-out.
But at the same time, you don’t want to stunt such an excellent talent’s development by not playing him. The 18-year-old only has one full season of first-team football under his belt. It could have a negative affect to kill that momentum.
All things considered, it may be better to send him into an environment where he’s expected to play every week.
Given how highly Ramsay appears to be thought of, that could even be a loan at a lower Premier League team. If not, the Championship has proved brilliant for the likes of Nat Phillips, Neco Williams and Harvey Elliott. That could be another option.
He’s likely to get minutes at Liverpool as long as Williams is able to be moved on. But these will surely come largely in domestic cup games. Maybe it’d be wise to allow him more meaningful game time at a temporary home.
