Liverpool’s dreams of another European crown will have to wait another year after being beaten by PSG in the last-16 of the Champions League.
It was ultimately a tie that would be decided by the goalkeepers, with Alisson saving Liverpool in the first leg and Gianluigi Donnarumma eventually winning the tie for PSG in the shootout.
The Reds, though, would have fancied their chances heading into penalties – having won 18 of their 27 shootouts prior to the tie.
Liverpool’s impressive penalty record wouldn’t come to fruition this time however, as Donnarumma expertly saved two spot kicks from Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez.
The latter’s penalty miss in particular, has garnered a lot of attention from Reds supporters, with some highlighting their lack of confidence in the Liverpool number nine.

Liverpool fans had no confidence in Darwin Nunez’s penalty vs PSG
Despite Nunez impressing against Southampton last weekend, the Uruguayan would only make the bench versus PSG, eventually replacing the ‘frustrating’ Diogo Jota after 73 minutes.
After a rather uneventful substitute cameo, Nunez would then be tasked with taking Liverpool’s second penalty in the shootout and well, we all know what happened next.
Reds fans have since reflected on Nunez’s penalty miss, with many claiming that they had no faith in him scoring from the spot.
One fan said via X (formerly Twitter): “I think the entire world knew Darwin Nunez was missing.”
A third fan said: “Darwin Nunez missing was one of the most obvious things you could predict.”
“Sending Darwin Nunez to take a penalty is unforgivable. Slot has to take that responsibility,” added another supporter.
Arne Slot was right to put faith into Nunez
Like previously mentioned, some of the Reds support have criticised Arne Slot’s decision to let Nunez take a penalty in the shootout.
The stats, however, suggest the Liverpool boss was correct to hand the 25-year-old the chance, as he scored 12 out of a possible 13 prior to Tuesday evening.
| Scored | Missed | Total | |
| Darwin Nunez penalty record | 12 | 1 | 13 |
Nunez actually went 12 straight penalties without missing until his last one in January 2024 against Chelsea – and it seems like that penalty miss may have haunted him when he stepped up against PSG.
With Nunez being linked with a Liverpool exit, moments like last night won’t do him any favours in securing a long-term future at Anfield.
