Liverpool haven’t ruled out contract extension for player who has been ‘poor’ this season

Liverpool are on course to enjoy one of their best seasons in the modern era of English football, yet things could be better off the pitch when it comes to contract situations.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to join Real Madrid this summer once his deal with the Anfield side expires at the end of this season, whilst Mohamed Salah is yet to sign a new contract despite positive updates in recent weeks.

With Virgil van Dijk also heading towards free-agency this year, Liverpool’s usual efficiency when it comes to tying down key players has dropped off big time in the last 18 months, with three of the club’s best players now likely to leave for nothing at the end of the season.

And more interestingly, one player who has seen his form drop off a cliff in recent months could still be in line for a potential contract extension at Liverpool.

Liverpool haven’t ruled out handing contract extension to Andy Robertson

According to the Athletic, extending Andy Robertson’s contract ‘isn’t out of the question’ with the Scottish international’s current deal with the Reds due to expire in 2026, alongside Ibrahima Konate and Caoimhin Kelleher’s terms with the Anfield side.

The former Hull City man has endured a torrid season with the Merseyside giants, with Robertson branded as ‘poor’ by John Arne Riise with the Scottish international struggling for fitness and form under Arne Slot.

With Liverpool targeting two left-back signings in the summer, Robertson’s future at Anfield looks as uncertain as it has done in years, with a full revamp of the position seemingly on the cards heading into the transfer window.

Which is what makes Liverpool’s stance on handing Robertson a contract extension an interesting one, yet the decision, should it come to pass, could end up being a smarter one that first envisioned by supporters.

Andy Robertson is the perfect mentor for Liverpool’s next left-back

It’s pretty clear that Liverpool need a replacement for Robertson at left-back next season, with Jamie Carragher one of the biggest advocates out there for a total transformation of the position over the summer transfer window.

However, Robertson’s form in recent months doesn’t dismiss the fact that the defender remains one of the best left-backs world football has seen in recent years, with the Scottish international an integral part of Liverpool’s recent successes under Jurgen Klopp.

And whoever Liverpool opt to sign this summer, Robertson will be the perfect mentor for the future left-back of the Anfield side, with the former Hull man the dream teacher for any player looking to succeed him in the position having made it his own across the years.
