What Trent Alexander-Arnold was spotted gesturing after Arne Slot took him off during Aston Villa 2-2 Liverpool

Liverpool drew 2-2 against Aston Villa on Wednesday as they dropped more points in the Premier League title race.

The Reds looked good to go 10 points clear at the top of the table after going 1-0 up through Mohamed Salah after half an hour.

However, Liverpool could not make it through to half-time, conceding twice in quick succession to go 2-1 down before the break.

Liverpool did manage to rally in the second-half, with Trent Alexander-Arnold getting a deflected equaliser.

There was still plenty of time for the Reds to get a winner, but Darwin Nunez missed a glorious chance with the goal gaping.

As Liverpool pushed to get the three points, Arne Slot decided to take Alexander-Arnold off. And as seen in his reaction to the change, Trent was not best pleased.

Trent Alexander-Arnold not happy with subsitution

Alexander-Arnold’s goal came at a really good time for Liverpool. However, the Reds could not capitalise and go on to get the winner.

Just five minutes after coming on, Trent was heading off the pitch, replaced by Conor Bradley.

It was perhaps an understandable substitution from Slot. Alexander-Arnold is not long back from injury and with such a packed fixture list, he can’t risk any further problems.

Despite this reasonable explanation, though, Trent was clearly not impressed. As spotted by journalist Lewis Steele, the Liverpool academy graduate made his disapproval fairly clear.

“Bradley also coming on. Trent looking over to the bench and appeared to gesture ‘eh???'” Steel reported on X.

Arne Slot explains Alexander-Arnold substitution

Alexander-Arnold may not have been happy to be coming off the pitch, but it was not a surprise to see him replaced.

The worry will be that Bradley himself went down with an injury not long after coming on himself and could now miss the upcoming games.

Slot was asked about his decision to take Alexander-Arnold off by TNT Sports immediately after the game. Unsurprisingly, the Liverpool head coach said it was a decision based on keeping the right-back fit,.

“Unfortunately Jota hasn’t been available for four or five months, the same with Trent and that’s why we had to make those substitutions, because I would love to keep them in the team,” he said.

“But we have to play Sunday and Wednesday and you saw with Conor the risk with injuries.”
