There was plenty of drama in the Merseyside Derby on Wednesday as Liverpool drew 2-2 against Everton.

The final clash between the two Liverpudlian neighbours at Goodison Park, there was always likely to be fireworks.

With the game fizzling towards a 2-1 win for Liverpool, it had looked as though the Reds had tamed the beast to earn the spoils at Goodison.

But then up popped James Tarkowski. The Everton captain scored what will no doubt become an iconic goal for the Toffees to turn three points into one for the Premier League leaders.

After that, chaos broke loose. Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure began a scuffle which ended in the two men being dismissed after the final whistle.

Arne Slot was then sent off by referee Michael Oliver for what are yet to become clear reasons. But as Liverpool fans wait for an explanation, some footage of Slot at the full-time whistle may provide some clues.

Arne Slot left fuming at Goodison Park

Although it was the last ever visit of Liverpool to Goodison, it was Slot’s very first taste of the the old ground. The Liverpool head coach will not forget it in a hurry, that’s for sure.

Slot was raging at the decision not to award his team a foul in the lead up to the Tarkowski equaliser, and he let his emotions bubble over at the final whistle. Both Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshoff were sent off after approaching Oliver on the pitch.

In some now deleted footage released by Sky Sports on Thursday morning, Slot is followed in the moments after the final whistle. Cameras captured the Dutchman berating one of Oliver’s officials before being given his marching orders.

Slot then rants at the fourth official for several seconds, before shaking the hand of another and continuing on to Oliver.

After grasping the referee’s hand and barking some words at him, the Reds boss is then stunned to see a red card brandished in his direction.

With celebratory music pounding around Goodison Park, it makes for a slightly surreal scene.

Slot set to miss Wolves game

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will appeal the red card issued to Slot. But it seems unlikely that they’d be successful anyway.

Referees tend to have each other’s backs on these matters and while you can understand that to a degree, it does not bode well for an appeal.

Having said that, Slot does not appear to do an awful lot wrong in the clip shown by Sky.

The 46-year-old is clearly angry and is certainly forceful in his words towards the officials, but his actions certainly do not overstep the mark.

We can only guess at what Slot said to prompt Oliver into sending him off. As he was not allowed to conduct any post-match media duties, we’ll have to wait for an explanation from the man himself.
