Liverpool were embroiled in a real throwback of a Merseyside Derby on Wednesday as they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Everton.

The Reds had been favourites to get the better of their neighbours, but were sucker-punched by a last-second equaliser from James Tarkowski.

Tarkowski’s goal understandably led to some overly emotional scenes from Everton supporters as they rejoiced in taking a draw from the last ever Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park.

High on adrenaline at full-time, Toffees midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure felt the need to rub the late goal in the faces of the travelling Liverpool supporters.

Having seen Doucoure pathetically sprint towards the Liverpool crowd to celebrate at full-time, Curtis Jones stepped in to take the Malian down a peg.

What ensued was a classic derby brawl, with both Doucoure and Jones given post-game red cards. It looked a humdinger at the time and on Thursday morning, new footage has emerged of the incident.

Footage emerges of Curtis Jones scuffle

In some ways, you can understand why Doucoure was so willing to let the Liverpool fans have it at full-time on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old has never won a sausage during his career and there’s an argument that it may well have been the high point of his time as a professional footballer.

Nevertheless, Jones was right to be furious. From a Liverpool point of view, it was great to see the Scouser standing up for the fans.

The Liverpool academy graduate has certainly enhance his reputation amongst supporters and when the TNT Sports footage is reviewed further, his favour should go up and up.

The slow motion video begins with Doucoure holding a finger to his lips in-front of the Liverpool fans.

Jones then steams into the former Watford player, grabbing hold off him with both hands before being ploughed into by Carlos Alcaraz and Ashely Young – who should know better at his big age.

A scuffle then ensues with cameras capturing a look of pure anger on the face of Jones as he grapples with Doucoure’s shirt.

The cavalry then arrive, and Alexis Mac Allister is first on the scene in Liverpool red. As the stewards and more players pile in, Reds fans can be seen in the back letting Doucoure know their thoughts, too. Pure drama.

Curtis Jones picks up Liverpool ban

It was not only Jones who was giving his marching orders after the fact on Wednesday, of course.

Arne Slot was sent off and will now miss Liverpool’s match against Wolves on Sunday. Assistant manager Sipke Hulshoff was given a red card too, meaning John Heitinga will likely be in charge for the weekend game.

Jones will miss that one as well, but given that his red card was actually for two yellows, it should be the only match he has to sit out.

While that is obviously disappointing, no Liverpool supporter will begrudge Jones getting involved in this one.

Doucoure should be feeling a little embarrassed on Thursday morning, and he’ll no doubt have earned himself one heck of a reception when these two teams meet at Anfield on April the 2nd.
