What’s really going on with Liverpool and Joshua Kimmich after insiders provide update

Liverpool have just over a week to make a move if they are to act in the January transfer window.

The Reds have so far kept their powder dry throughout the New Year, with little sign that that will change before February the 3rd.

However, although it doesn’t look likely that the Liverpool squad will be added to in the coming days, plans for the summer appear to be in full swing.

Liverpool are targeting a left-back, with strong claims that Milos Kerkez has emerged as a top target.

But while other areas of the defence will also need bolstering, there is still a strong argument that Arne Slot still has to sign another option in midfield, too.

With that in mind, links to Bayern Munich utility man Joshua Kimmich will not go away. Kimmich is available on a free transfer at the end of the season and journalist Florian Plettenberg has now offered a new update into interest from Anfield.

Liverpool and Joshua Kimmich ‘not hot’

Along with the trio at Liverpool, Kimmich is set to be one of the most high profile free agents on the market this summer.

After 10 years at Bayern, the 29-year-old looks like he could finally call time on his career with the German record champions.

Liverpool would feel like an unlikely choice of destination given that the Germany international will turn 30 next month, and in an update on Tuesday, Plettenberg claimed that insiders at Anfield had moved to dismiss Kimmich as a target.

“Liverpool, as confirmed by close sources, is not currently pursuing him actively, partly because the club is overstaffed in central midfield and focusing on other profiles,” said the German reporter.

Adding to that update on Thursday evening, Plettenberg reiterated that things are ‘not hot’ between Liverpool and Kimmich.

“As reported, Joshua Kimmich and Liverpool currently not hot,” he says.

Why Liverpool should re-think Kimmich stance

Although you can understand why the Liverpool owners would be unwilling to sign an ageing, high-earning player like Kimmich, we think they should not dismiss him entirely.

The Bayern legend may be set to turn 30, but he still has plenty to offer. Liverpool could need leaders given that all of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah may yet depart. Kimmich is certainly that.

What he also is is capable at both right-back and central midfield. Liverpool need a midfielder anyway and if Alexander-Arnold leaves, right-back becomes a problem, too.

Given how much Liverpool would save on the wage bill if they lose one, two or three of their star trio, they could also justify a short-term deal for Kimmich.

It doesn’t appear that they will, of course, and that is by and large fine. But if Kimmich really does leave Bayern, we’d still like to see the Reds explore this further.
