Dejan Lovren reveals whether Mo Salah has picked a new club and calls Liverpool out for lack of respect

With just three-and-a-half months left of the season, Liverpool are playing a dangerous game with three of their best players.

Things have been going brilliantly for the Reds out on the pitch, but behind the scenes they are running the risk of losing some enormously important stars.

Perhaps top of this list – or at least level with Virgil van Dijk – is Mohamed Salah.

Salah has arguably been the best player in world football in 2024/25, and leads the way in the Premier League for goals and assists.

However, the Egyptian will be free to leave Anfield for nothing once his contract expires in June.

As the debate over whether Salah will stay or go rumbles on, former Liverpool teammate and close friend Dejan Lovren has weighed in to give his information about the situation.

Dejan Lovren gives Mo Salah insight

Lovren and Salah became very good friends during three years spent together with Liverpool.

After Lovren left in 2020 he has continued playing and is now with Greek side PAOK. In the meantime, the Croatian has stirred the pot a little by giving an interview about Salah’s future to WinWin.

“I have to be careful what I say now, because I know a lot of things,” says Lovren when asked to give an insight into what Salah wants.

“Everyone wants him to stay, and I personally want him to stay. I called him one day and said: ‘Mo, you have to think about yourself. Look at everything you’ve given this club and what you can still give.’ In the end, I came to the conclusion that the club doesn’t respect him enough, or at least not as much as they think they deserve, but that’s another side of the story, it’s all about what goes on behind the scenes.”

Asked whether Salah has started to think about leaving Liverpool for a specific club, Lovren said that while he doesn’t know of a set plan, the 32-year-old is certainly ‘thinking about a new step.’

“H didn’t start thinking about a specific club, but he started thinking about a new step, everyone is shocked, but it’s the truth,” said the centre-back.

“Sometimes you can’t understand football, football is cruel, sometimes they don’t give you a clear answer, there are people who have a lot of money and maybe they don’t care who Mohamed Salah is or what he offers on the pitch, maybe in the end they only look at the financial side, maybe they say: “Well, this player is not worth this amount”.

“It hurts, but as I said, I think it’s a wrong decision, because this guy still has many years to offer.”

Lovren says Salah ‘loves Liverpool’

This is an interesting interview with Lovren in which the Croat goes into some detail about his closeness with Salah and how it all came about.

And despite some slightly incendiary claims from Lovren on Salah’s future, he does go on to say that Liverpool’s Egyptian King really does love the club and in an ideal world would stay put for years to come.

“He loves Liverpool, by the way,” says the 35-year-old. “He loves Liverpool a lot and he wants to stay, and that’s the most important part, maybe he sees himself retiring there, I’m not entirely sure about that.

“But in the end it’s not about those around him, it’s about other people.”

With Salah’s contract ticking over into the final few months, any hope of the No.11 staying is starting to wane. But it isn’t over just yet.
