Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler makes Arne Slot claim in Trent Alexander-Arnold debate

Trent Alexander-Arnold has come under some fire in recent weeks due to a string of poor defensive performances for Liverpool.

The England international was slammed over the weekend for his display against AFC Bournemouth, with Alexander-Arnold labelled as ‘woeful’ after being tormented all afternoon at the Vitality Stadium before coming off with a thigh injury.

With Alexander-Arnold set to miss tonight’s game against Tottenham, the 26-year-old right-back has endured some harsh criticism this season after some notably bad defensive performances in Liverpool’s backline.

Yet it hasn’t been all bad news for Alexander-Arnold this campaign, with Robbie Fowler believing that Arne Slot’s tactics could be the reason why the Liverpool no. 66 has struggled in some games for the Reds.

Robbie Fowler believes Arne Slot is telling Trent Alexander-Arnold to push forward

Speaking on the Line Up, the Anfield legend made the claim that Slot is instructing Alexander-Arnold to push forward, something that the 26-year-old has been criticised for this season, even during games Liverpool have won.

With Alexander-Arnold set to join Real Madrid, the defender’s performances at the back have done little to help his reputation amongst fans and experts, yet Fowler has stepped out to back the right-back and to remind everyone just how good the fullback really is.

Fowler said when asked if Alexander-Arnold’s defending is a real issue: “No, not at all. When you’re playing for a club like Liverpool, there’s a chance you’re going to have more possession, so you need players like Trent to deliver chances for everyone else.

“Let’s also not forget that he’s won everything playing for an unbelievably top team in Liverpool. Defensively, he is good, but we do get sort of critical that he could be too further forward, but that isn’t down to him, that’s likely the manager saying: ‘Go play forward.'”

Tony Bellew agrees by making ‘exceptional’ Trent Alexander-Arnold claim

It wasn’t just Fowler on the Line Up who was backing Alexander-Arnold to shrug off the noise, with former boxer and famed Everton fan Tony Bellew also siding with the Liverpool defender after this recent round of criticism for the right-back.

Bellew said shortly after Fowler’s defence of Alexander-Arnold: “That’s the problem, he so good going forward that you have to find faults, he makes a slight mistake or he’s caught out of possession, but he’s out of possession because he’s trying to create goals.

“I’ve never seen a right-back be so influential in a game, I’ve never seen a right-back do what he can do. He’s an exceptional footballer and he’ll do what he chooses to do, and he has every right to choose.

“He’s won absolutely everything at Liverpool, he’s played for his boyhood club, so if he wants to go and live in Madrid then good on him, that’s up to him and he’s allowed to make that choice, just because he’s from Liverpool doesn’t mean he has to stay, he might want to see the world.”
