Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is currently on the lookout for his next managerial position.
Having kickstarted his coaching career with the Reds academy – Gerrard most recently left Al Ettifaq, after an 18-month stint in Saudi Arabia.
Finishing sixth in his first season in charge, Gerrard has since struggled leaving the Saudi side languishing in 12th place.
The former midfielder has since returned to England, which has seen him be linked with a whole host of vacant positions.
EFL side Carlisle United had surprisingly been linked with Gerrard – but that move however now seems off the cards.

Carlisle United appoint Mark Hughes after Steven Gerrard links
Having managed gigantic clubs like Aston Villa and Rangers, many may have been surprised to see the Anfield great linked with a League Two position.
Currently sat at rock bottom of the EFL, Carlisle recently sacked former Newcastle defender Mike Williamson as their manager.
The Cumbrian side were considering an approach for Gerrard, but have seemingly turned their attention elsewhere – appointing former Man Utd striker Mark Hughes as their new boss.
With over 600 games on his managerial CV, it seems like Carlisle have opted for the experience of Hughes, perhaps not wanting to take a risk on Gerrard with relegation on the cards.
Could Gerrard return to Liverpool coaching role?
It’s fair to say that many fans would have been shocked to see the former Reds skipper step down to League Two, despite his ambitions to get back into the game.
Gerrard has enjoyed a mixed managerial record so far with impressive stints at the Liverpool academy and Rangers being followed by disappointing spells with Aston Villa and Al Ettifaq.
| Team | Played | Win | Loss | Draw | Win % |
| Rangers | 193 | 125 | 42 | 26 | 64.8 |
| Aston Villa | 40 | 13 | 8 | 19 | 32.5 |
| Al Ettifaq | 59 | 23 | 16 | 20 | 39.0 |
With his reputation taking a hit in recent years, the former England international will want to get his next job right and what better way to do that, than to link up with his boyhood club again?
Reds assistant coach John Heitinga has been linked with a Liverpool exit, which could provide Gerrard with a potential opening as a coach on Arne Slot’s staff.
It’s a long shot but I’m sure both Gerrard and Liverpool would love to see it happen.
