Liverpool could not be happier with the direction Arne Slot has taken them in since Jurgen Klopp left the club last summer.

The job of taking over from Klopp had long been seen as a dreaded one at Anfield, with the German leaving seemingly impossible shoes to fill.

At one time, the man who seemed destined to step in was former captain and club icon Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard embarked on a path in management honing his skills with the Liverpool academy sides before making well-placed steps to Rangers and then Aston Villa.

However, Gerrard failed miserable at Villa, and the 44-year-old was soon cast out to the footballing backwaters in Saudi Arabia.

After 18 months at Al Ettifaq, the legendary former Liverpool midfielder stepped down from his post last week. And having headed back to the UK, Gerrard has already been linked with a surprise job.

Carlisle United consider Steven Gerrard approach

It is tricky to predict what Gerrard’s next move will be. Having hardly pulled up any trees out in the Middle East, he will not be on the list of Premier League clubs any time soon.

However, as the likes of Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney have shown, the star power of Gerrard’s name alone is likely to land him somewhere at a decent level.

What the former Liverpool man has in mind is anyone’s guess, but it’s unlikely that he’d be wanting to drop as low as the English fourth division.

Nevertheless, according to The Daily Mail, Gerrard is soon set to be faced with that choice.

They claim that League Two side Carlisle United are considering an approach to Stevie G after sacking manager Mike Williamson on Monday.

Carlisle’s American owners are said to have ‘raised the idea’ of hiring Gerrard to get them out of relegation trouble. However, for the time being, the move is said to be considered a ‘long shot.’

Where are Carlisle United?

This would be quite the climbdown from Gerrard. So used to being at the very top of the English football pyramid, a move to Carlisle would see him drop down to the bottom.

As things stand, the Cumbrians are rock bottom of the English Football League, sitting in 24th place in League Two.

Five points from safety, something drastic may be needed to get them out of trouble.

It seems unlikely that such a storied figure as Gerrard would see this move as being the right one for him at any time, but given his reputation as a football manager is very much in question right now, he needs to think very carefully about his next step.

This is surely not it.
