Liverpool told to ‘hold their horses’ over Darwin Nunez’s record-breaking Brentford performance

Darwin Nunez was the eventual hero for Liverpool this weekend after a thrilling and dominant performance against Brentford.

The Uruguay international came off the bench to score two stoppage-time goals to secure Liverpool a big result in west London, with Nunez setting a new Premier League record in the process with his late strikes.

With Nunez admitting that he’s hit a rough patch this season, the 25-year-old attacker needed this performance arguably more than any other Liverpool player, with the striker’s Anfield future currently up in the air.

Yet Steve Nicol has told Liverpool fans to not get their hopes up about Nunez returning to form.

Speaking on ESPN FC, the pundit shared how Liverpool have been in this situation before with Nunez in thinking the striker has finally turned a corner, only to be let down by the Uruguay international in following matches.

And Nicol believes Nunez’s heroics for Liverpool against Brentford are nothing anything for fans to latch onto, with the pundit saying when asked if the 25-year-old’s performance has done anything to help his status: “Nothing, unfortunately, it’s a conversation we’ve had before.

“I remember once against Newcastle where he scored two fantastic goals and it started the pattern of: ‘Oh this could be the turning point.’ Hold your horses, don’t get excited, unfortunately again, if Jota is fit next week, Jota’s starting over Nunez.”

Nunez still looks primed for Liverpool departure

Nunez’s heroics for Liverpool against Brentford this weekend could end up being the difference between another disappointing title collapse or the Reds claiming only their second-ever Premier League championship.

Yet as Nicol himself says, the display does little to change the striker’s situation at Anfield, with Nunez on course to leave Liverpool at the end of this season after failing to make the grade yet again in the English top-flight.
