Arne Slot will be more than happy with the start he has made to life at Liverpool.

The Dutch coach faced the intimidating task of replacing Jurgen Klopp at the Merseyside club this season after the legendary figure departed the Reds at the end of the 2023/24 campaign after spending an incredible eight and a half years at the Premier League club.

Slot has tweaked Liverpool’s style of play and has embraced the challenge so far, as the Reds currently find themselves top of the Premier League and Champions League tables while remaining in both domestic cups.

Having come flying out of the blocks, the Dutch coach’s team have slowed down a little in recent games winning one of their last four contests.

Jamie Carragher has spotted a reason for this and whilst addressing the media on Friday morning, Slot shut any concerns down.

Arne Slot believes Liverpool defence is not a concern

Liverpool have kept eight clean sheets across the 20 Premier League matches they have played this season, which is only second to Nottingham Forest’s nine.

The majority of these came at the start of the campaign when the Reds looked to be very solid from a defensive point of view, however, that has disappeared in recent weeks with Slot’s team keeping just two clean sheets across their last 11 games in all competitions.

Speaking to the media during his press conference on Friday, the Liverpool boss stated that he believes his backline is not a worry, pointing out that only their opponents have changed.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a concern but it’s also not what we want as it was one of our strengths at the beginning of the season,” Slot said via Ian Doyle.

“If I look at the amount of chances we give away in games before, I don’t see much difference. Only team is the opposition.”

Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to sign a defender this month in order to win the 2025 Premier League title, however, these comments from Slot suggest that this is unlikely to happen.

Jamie Carragher has major concerns about Liverpool defence

Jamie Carragher pointed out the flaws in Liverpool’s defence following the Reds’ 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.

“Liverpool should’ve won tonight, but they continue to create big chances even in the games they don’t win, but the defensive solidity they had at the start of the season has gone,” the Sky Sports pundit said.

The former defender would like to see the Merseyside club address this in January with Carragher hoping Liverpool sign a left-sided centre-back, who can also fill in at left-back.

It remains to be seen if the Reds take the pundit up on his advice as Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez continues to be linked to Liverpool in 2025.
