Liverpool are sitting comfortably at the top of the Premier League four points ahead of Arsenal with a game in hand.

Even after two draws against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, Arne Slot’s side remain the clear favourites for the Premier League title this season, with the Reds looking like a safe bet to go all the way one year after Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

With Slot praising Liverpool as ‘outstanding’ after Tuesday’s draw against Forest, the Anfield side are showing this season just how persistent they can be when trying to get a result under their new Dutch manager, with teams buckling under their quality and system.

Yet Jamie Carragher has highlighted one player Liverpool are missing from their squad that could end up being the difference between winning the title or missing out.

Liverpool urged to sign versatile left-sided central defender

Speaking on Stick to Football, the pundit noted that Liverpool are the only top Premier League side without a left-sided defender who can fill in at left-back, with Carragher once again urging the Reds to bring in a defender this January.

Carragher has already said Liverpool should sign a left-back this January with Andy Robertson’s hitting new lows this season as Kostas Tsimikas’ fitness continues to be a problem, for the Reds, and the pundit has once again urged his former team to spend in the market for a defender.

Carragher said: “Liverpool haven’t got a player that every other club has; a left-sided defender who can play centre-back or left-back. Arsenal have Calafiori, United have Martinez, Chelsea have Colwill, City have Nathan Ake and Gvardiol, even Tottenham have Van de Ven who can do a little bit at left-back.

“Liverpool need, and I’ve said this for a long time, a left-sided defender who can do a bit of both, who has stature, presence, power. I think if Liverpool sign that player in January, I’d be certain we win the league.”

Who could Liverpool sign this January to fill Carragher’s request?

Left-sided centre-backs have become a prized possession in football, with some clubs like Arsenal and City paying top dollar for some of the most exciting names coming through in the position.

Yet for the Reds, options are few and far between this January, with Liverpool linked with US Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu, who is more an attack-minded left-back rather than a player who could fill in centrally if needed.

Indeed, the market for left-sided centre-backs who can operate as left-backs is dried up this January, and Liverpool might have to wait until the summer to find a player who could match Carragher’s request.
