Trent Alexander-Arnold’s name has dominated the headlines on and off the pitch for Liverpool this season.

Barring a couple of games, the 26-year-old has enjoyed a superb season for club and country and has really relished working with Arne Slot as the Reds lead the way in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

However, the Liverpool right-back’s contract expires at the end of the season, due to which his future very much hangs in the balance.

Real Madrid have already had one bid rejected for Alexander-Arnold and are planning another offer in January.

And now, the Spanish giants’ transfer stance has emerged as the Reds prepare for a tense end to the mid-season window.

The Spanish giants are on the lookout for a right-back and their interest in Alexander-Arnold is well-documented as they aim to snap him up on a free transfer if they can’t get him this month.

Real Madrid don’t have a fully-fit right-back in their squad currently as Dani Carvajal is out with an ACL injury.

The Spanish international is also in the twilight years of his career and doesn’t have too much left in his tank at 33, making a deal for Alexander-Arnold all the more important.

Carlo Ancelotti has tried to use Eder Militao and Lucas Vasquez in that position and while they are capable of getting the job done, having a specialist player could do them a world of good.

Ancelotti suggested Real Madrid are still trying to make signings in January, which is a sign that they haven’t given up on signing Alexander-Arnold this month.

And now, Marca add that Los Blancos only want to sign the Liverpool captain this month and have no other plans of dipping into the transfer market.

The report also makes it abundantly clear that Alexander-Arnold has given his word to Real Madrid, although it remains to be seen whether he joins the club this month or at the end of the season.

Liverpool need the saga to end ASAP

Liverpool are in talks to extend Alexander-Arnold’s contract and are also locked in talks with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah to sort out their future.

The Reds have played some fantastic football on the pitch this season, but the trio’s contract situations have turned out to be quite the distraction over the past two months.

Slot and co are involved in a title race, so they need to sort out the future of three of their most important players to avoid the saga from spilling into the business end of the campaign.
