Liverpool have developed a reputation for taking a measured approach in the transfer market over the years.

The Reds aren’t really frugal spenders, but they haven’t splashed the cash just for the sake of it and have always reacted if their long-standing targets have become available for transfer.

January is usually a tough time to do business as it’s hard to find value for money, but over the years, Liverpool have had a lot of luck in this regard.

And now, if reports are to be believed, one of their long-standing targets is up for sale in January and Liverpool should pounce.

Liverpool should look to sign Aurelien Tchouameni

While Liverpool signed some quality players in the Jurgen Klopp era, a handful of them also got away from them over the years.

And most of them to Real Madrid, with the Reds having a serious interest in the likes of Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe before they decided to move to Spain.

Aurelien Tchouameni is another player who falls in the same category. In the summer of 2022, Liverpool made a move to sign him, but Real Madrid swooped after beating the Reds in the UEFA Champions League final to rub salt into the wounds of the Anfield faithful.

But now, it appears as if Real Madrid are open to offloading him, with Sport reporting that they are willing to listen to offers for the French international.

Fabrizio Romano reported in August last year that Jurgen Klopp was obsessed with Tchouameni and if reports are to be believed, Liverpool made multiple attempts (and failed) to sign the midfielder over the years.

But now, the situation seems to be different and Slot has the chance to do something that was Klopp’s dream at Anfield.

Tchouameni has been lauded as an ‘exceptional’ player by Paul Pogba and with his future hanging in the balance, it remains to be seen if Liverpool make another attempt to sign him this year.

Tchouameni a no brainer for Liverpool

After Martin Zubimendi rejected a move to Anfield, the Reds refrained from pursuing alternatives, instead opting to use Ryan Gravenberch as a number six.

And while that decision has already paid dividends for Slot, another quality player in that position would allow the Dutchman to rotate his squad and keep everyone fresh.

Tchouameni is one of the best defensive midfielders in world football and has been a key player for club and country over the years.

His skillset is perfect for the Premier League and his ability to play as a central defender is yet another reason why his signing is a no-brainer for Liverpool if they get the opportunity to do so.
