Liverpool are showing an interest in a transfer for AFC Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez, so Rousing The Kop has looked into everything you need to know about him.

The Reds have enjoyed great consistency at left-back in recent years thanks to their transfer for Andy Robertson following Hull City’s relegation from the Premier League in 2016/17. Yet Liverpool now find themselves studying a potential successor for the Scotland international.

Robertson and to a lesser extent his deputy Kostas Tsimikas have forced Liverpool to check the market for possible left-back targets, like Kerkez, as mistakes and sub-optimal displays become more regular. But Anfield chiefs are reluctant to pay big for an ageing replacement.

Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in signing Milos Kerkez from AFC Bournemouth

So, the Daily Mail has reported that given the Reds’ preference for a younger player in a low price range, Liverpool are interested in Kerkez’s transfer from Bournemouth. He is viewed as a more realistic option to other Premier League left-backs, like Antonee Robinson of Fulham.

Kerkez, who is good friends with Reds midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, has an admirer in Arne Slot, too. The Liverpool head coach admired Kerkez whilst in the Eredivisie with AZ Alkmaar, from whom sporting director Richard Hughes signed the left-back for Bournemouth in 2023.

Hughes, who left his position as Bournemouth’s technical director to move to Merseyside in 2024, paid AZ Alkmaar £15.5m for Kerkez’s transfer at 19 years old after his breakout season in the Netherlands. The Hungarian’s form at Dean Court has also since drawn extra interest.

According to further reporting from TEAMtalk, while Liverpool see Kerkez as a key target for the winter 2025 transfer window, Manchester United are also big admirers of the left-back. The Red Devils have even spoken with Bournemouth to check Kerkez’s potential availability.

AZ Alkmaar bet on Kerkez’s potential having only played 19 games for AC Milan’s Primavera side aged 18 and never at the first-team level. Yet the transfer paid off as Bournemouth bet £15.5m on Kerkez 18 months later after his five goals and eight assists in 57 senior matches.

Milos Kerkez has emerged as a transfer target for Liverpool and Manchester United owing to his form with AFC Bournemouth. The Hungary defender is proving to be a promising box-to-box left-back at Dean Court, where he is an essential player in coach Andoni Iraola’s system.

He is also very confident defending against any opposition forward thanks to Kerkez’s desire to be the best player in the left-back’s position alongside his bravery. The Hungary defender is also a very energetic presence and struggles to contain his lively approach in any scenario.

Additionally, Kerkez is an effective tackler who rarely gets dribbled past while attempting to win possession. But while he is often successful in contesting ground duels, aerial duels are one of Kerkez’s weaker traits with the left-back seldom successful while contesting headers.

His fitness levels can be impacted by Kerkez’s energetic style with Iraola often forced to sub the defender in the closing stages of matches. But the Bournemouth boss admired how the Hungarian helped the Cherries beat Manchester City 2-1 at Dean Court in November 2024.

Iraola noted about Kerkez’s role in Bournemouth beating Manchester City: “For me, it’s very important how he closed the game because a lot of times we’ve had to sub him because he was not finishing with the same energy.

“I think he’s adding these small things to his game to finish strong, do your job defensively [and] suffer even when you are tired and the team needs you there.”

Iraola has also previously praised Kerkez for his mental resilience to play in tough fixtures for his club and country. Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher is also a big fan of what Kerkez delivers Bournemouth and backed the left-back for a transfer to Anfield if Arne Slot eyes a left-back.

“Kerkez has been a revelation at Bournemouth,” Carragher exclaimed on Sky Sports about the Liverpool target in December 2024. “Kerkez looks like a full-back and he’s aggressive. He’s been superb since he came into the Premier League and is one to watch in the future.”

What position does Milos Kerkez play?

Liverpool have an interest in Milos Kerkez with the Bournemouth defender showing himself to be a very promising left-back. He is even capable of playing in a more advanced role from the left-hand side of a pitch. Kerkez has also appeared very sparingly as a right-back so far.

Kerkez started to play at left-back in his youth after coaches tried to control his aggression on the field. He initially started out in midfield and enjoyed playing in a more advanced part of the pitch. But youth coaches for ETO FC Gyor felt Kerkez had everything to be a left-back.

Moving to AC Milan in 2021 further afforded Kerkez a chance to learn first-hand from France international Theo Hernandez. The Hungary defender appreciated watching how Hernandez dealt with attacking from left-back and using his pace to contribute effectively at either end.

What is Milos Kerkez’s dream transfer?

While Liverpool and Manchester United are studying a transfer from AFC Bournemouth that would keep Milos Kerkez in England, his dream move would be to one of Spain’s top squads.

“Spain. One of the top teams there,” Kerkez simply stated in 2022 about his dream transfer.
