‘Fast and aggressive’ Premier League player is Arne Slot’s dream January signing at Liverpool

Liverpool fans should expect activity in the January transfer window, particularly with Arne Slot having focused heavily on outgoings in the summer.

As is always the case, however, signing players midway through the season could prove to be a difficult task for Slot and Liverpool.

Managers and clubs are always reluctant to lose players in the January transfer window, meaning Slot will have his work cut out for him in chasing any potential new Anfield aces.

Given the superb start from Slot and his players, new faces shouldn’t be the priority, with the contract dealings of many current stars much more important.

At the same time, however, injuries and fatigue will quickly begin to take their toll on the Reds, and one or two new players could make all the difference between a successful and unsuccessful season.

Arne Slot should target Milos Kerkez for Liverpool

Slot has a strong squad, but the left-back position is arguably the area that needs improving the most, with the boss having been forced to toggle between Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.

While a Liverpool legend, the former is not what he used to be, with his back-to-back penalties conceded against Southampton and Real Madrid epitomising his struggles of late.

The latter meanwhile, while often filling in well, will simply never reach the very high standards that the Scot has set over several years.

A dream January signing for Liverpool could, therefore, be Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, who has really impressed for the Cherries this season.

Liverpool are targeting the ‘fast and aggressive’ Kerkez, who joined the south coast club from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in July 2023.

Still very young at 21, he could easily become Roberton’s replacement, with Kerkez admirably boasting plenty of Premier League experience, having also been playing for a team that likes to attack as much as possible.

Liverpool are looking at Rayan Ait Nouri and Jorrel Hato along with Kerkez, with left-back seemingly an area of concern for the Merseyside club.

Is left-back the most problematic position for Arne Slot at Liverpool?

Liverpool are quite simply stacked in every position on the field, with goalkeepers Alisson and Caoimhin Kelleher soon to be joined by Giorgi Mamardashvili, although an exit can be expected in that area soon.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley are flying at right-back, with Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah able deputies for Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

Further forward, Slot has several talented midfielders in Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott.

And in the final third, the likes of Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa are all vying for selection.

But even with a star-studded attack, Slot likes his full-backs to help out in the final third, with Kerkez more than capable of stepping up in that regard.

Robertson and Alexander-Arnold have led the way for Premier League assists from the back in recent seasons, with the duo topping the pile.

The latter even made history in the 3-3 draw with Newcastle United in early December, with Alexander-Arnold becoming the first defender to secure 60 Premier League assists.
