Arne Slot should drop ‘erratic’ Liverpool player for Premier League clash against West Ham United

Liverpool will look to finish 2024 on a high as they travel to the London Stadium to take on West Ham United tomorrow.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow, the Reds will begin 2025 as Premier League leaders due to their six-point lead over Arsenal at the summit.

The Reds also have a game in hand, making them firm favorites to get their hands on the title in Arne Slot’s first season at the club.

The game against West Ham won’t be straightforward, though, as the Hammers have picked up some form under Julen Lopetegui in recent weeks.

And after what happened against Leicester City, Slot should drop one of his attackers for the Reds’ crucial away trip.

Liverpool must drop Darwin Nunez vs West Ham United

Liverpool beat the Foxes 3-1 at Anfield last time out, but the game didn’t get off to a good start as Jordan Ayew silenced the home crowd with an early goal.

Goals from Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah, however, turned the tide in Liverpool’s favour as they cemented their status as league leaders.

While the result was another step in the right direction for Slot and his team, Darwin Nunez drew a blank again and cut a frustrated figure in front of goal.

He missed a fantastic chance to score in the second half after being played through by Salah as he shot it straight at Leicester goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk.

With Diogo Jota now back fully fit and Luis Diaz also capable of playing as a number nine – having scored five goals from that position against Bayer Leverkusen and Tottenham Hotspur – Slot has the easy decision of demoting the Uruguayan to the bench.

In a tricky away game, Jota’s instinct inside the penalty area could be the best choice for Liverpool, while Diaz’s movement and trickery could add another dimension to their attack.

Nunez fighting to save his Liverpool career

Alan Shearer described Nunez as erratic earlier this season, which is a word that actually sums him up.

He wears his heart on his sleeve and puts in the hard yards, but in terms of raw numbers, his tally of four goals from 23 appearances across all competitions this season is simply not good enough for a number nine.

Jamie Carragher feels Liverpool must sell Nunez next summer and that might well be the case if he flatters to deceive between now and the end of the season.
