Mexico forward Cesar Huerta set to join new club after Liverpool failed in move to sign him

One of the more bizarre Liverpool transfer stories from last summer looks set to reach a conclusion in the coming days.

The Reds were linked with all sorts of players before the start of the season, with some rumours more plausible than others.

One which felt like a strange one was the story of Mexico forward Cesar Huerta.

Just before the summer transfer deadline there were reports that Liverpool were on the verge of signing Huerta from Liga MX side Pumas.

However, with the Reds planning to subsequently loan Huerta out to Sunderland, the move broke down after Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris refused to uphold their part of the deal.

And despite claims that Liverpool could come back for Huerta in January, the 24-year-old now looks to be on his way to a different European club.

Cesar Huerta on his way to Anderlecht

Earlier in December it had been reported that Huerta could be signed for just £8m in the January window.

The Mexican was said to be desperate to get his move to Europe and would not sign a contract extension at Pumas.

As a result, it felt likely that someone would come in and poach Huerta, who has scored six goals in 21 games this term, in mid-season.

And according to Mexican outlet Super Deportivo, two clubs have actually come forward to try and sign the winger.

They claim that the offers on the table are from La Liga side Osasuna and Belgian giants Anderlecht.

Huerta is said to prefer the move to Anderlecht and is reportedly in ‘very advanced negotiations’ with the Brussels side. With Pumas keen to recoup a transfer fee in January, it’s claimed that the transfer is expected to be finalised soon.

Will Liverpool keep watching Huerta?

With all due respect to Osasuna and Anderlecht, the level of side in for Huerta this winter just adds to the intrigue surrounding Liverpool’s failed move for him back in August.

Clearly, the Reds did not think Huerta was ready to join the Liverpool squad, or they would not have bothered with a loan move to the Championship.

But Huerta is 24, he is not an especially young player. There does not seem to be much use in playing the long game here.

It could be that Huerta explodes at Anderlecht and could emerge onto Liverpool’s radar once again. But it would have to be a meteoric rise in a really short space of time for that to be feasible.

Of course, Huerta should be watched with interest as he adapts from Mexico to Europe, but we’d be surprised if those links to Liverpool ever now reappear.
