Cesar Huerta reveals how close he actually was to joining Liverpool this summer

Liverpool made just the two signings this summer, yet that number could have been three had Cesar Huerta joined the Reds.

The Mexico international emerged as a late target for the Anfield side as Huerta was seemingly close to joining Liverpool, with the original plan seeing the winger sign for the Merseyside giants before joining Sunderland on loan.

However, the transfer ultimately collapsed as Huerta remained in Mexico with Pumas, with Liverpool ending the summer window with just Federico Chiesa as the only outfield signing from the entire market.

And Huerta has now revealed how close his move to Liverpool actually was.

Huerta says his ‘suitcase was ready’ to fly out to Liverpool

Speaking to the press whilst on international duty with Mexico, the 23-year-old revealed that he was ready to travel to England to complete the move before the transfer collapsed at the last second.

Given how left-field the signing would have been for Liverpool, it’s perhaps no real surprise that the transfer never came through, even with Huerta a top performer in the Liga MX and a player who could make a real impact in Europe.

With Huerta’s agent left fuming with the collapsed Liverpool move, though, it appears that something went wrong on the Reds’ side of things, yet Huerta isn’t too upset with the deal not going through last month.

Huerta said: “I already had my suitcase ready, and but then I had to drop it. I know that sooner or later, if I keep doing things right, I’ll get the opportunity. It’s a move that only happens once, and I’m focused on Pumas.”

Liverpool move might have come too soon for Huerta in his career

The leap from Liga MX to the Premier League is one few players have made and even fewer have succeeded in, with Manchester United cult hero Javier Hernandez the standout player from this niche category.

And for Huerta, a move to Liverpool this summer might have come too soon in the winger’s career, even with the attacker hitting double digits last season for goals and assists with Pumas.

Indeed, Huerta’s time to move to Europe will come eventually, yet right now, the 23-year-old could benefit from an extra year in Mexico before finding the right move across the Atlantic, which might still end up being Liverpool.
