Arne Slot says he’s noticed something ‘special’ that Liverpool fans have done for Darwin Nunez

Liverpool are set to lock horns with Fulham tomorrow as they return to Premier League action after nearly two weeks.

The Merseyside derby was postponed last week due to the adverse weather conditions caused by Storm Darragh, with the game against Everton at Goodison Park set to be played on the 11th of February.

Arne Slot’s side have a game in hand and are four points clear of second-placed Chelsea, who closed the gap at the top with their 4-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur.

Darwin Nunez has dominated the headlines in recent weeks due to his dry run in front of goal as he drew a blank once again against Girona.

And Slot feels Liverpool fans are doing special for him every time he gets onto the pitch.

In recent weeks, Nunez has featured regularly for Liverpool as the likes of Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota have spent time on the sidelines.

However, he has scored just three goals in 19 appearances across all competitions this season, which isn’t a good record for a number nine.

When asked about the Uruguayan’s recent form, Slot opined that he still contributes to the team’s cause with his work rate while also acknowledging that his end product isn’t of the required standard.

“If you only look at goals, he hasn’t scored the amount of goals we want but he does have an impact with his work rate,” said Slot at a press conference.

“As a number nine, you want to score more goals and that’s definitely what he wants as well. I also judge them on their workrate and what they bring to the team.

The Dutchman also lauded the Liverpool faithful for being behind the striker as chants of ‘Nunez! Nunez’ have always been heard ringing around the ground whenever the striker takes to the pitch.

Slot added: “He himself has wanted to score more goals mainly due to the fact that the fans support him so much. He wants it too much to score for himself and the fans because they’ve been so supportive.

“It definitely does [get him going] and if you’re in a good place you don’t need the support of fans.

“But what I like about special fans is they are not only supportive if it’s going really well for a player but especially if he maybe needs that support and that’s what makes these fans of ours special in my opinion.”

Nunez’s record for Liverpool so far

Nunez has emerged as one of the most polarising players in recent Liverpool history.

While his end product clearly hasn’t been up to the mark, he wears his heart on his sleeve and fights for the team whenever he’s on the pitch.

That said, his numbers really need to improve if he’s to have a long-term future at the club, with Liverpool keeping tabs on Joao Pedro to add another option to their attack.

Jamie Carragher feels Liverpool must sell Nunez in 2025 and if his form doesn’t improve before the end of the season, the Reds might be faced with a tough decision in the summer.
