What Liverpool are really thinking about signing Joao Pedro from Brighton

Liverpool supporters are starting to think about transfers as the January window steams into view.

The Reds have done some brilliant business in the winter over the years, with the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Philippe Coutinho two good examples of that.

This time, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool feel the need to bolster their squad ahead of a potential Premier League title push.

If they do decide to enter the market, then most fans would probably like to see a new midfielder added to the Liverpool squad.

However, recent weeks have shone a light on the probability that Arne Slot could do with a new centre-forward.

As a result, links with Brighton’s Joao Pedro have caught the attention.

Liverpool keeping watch over Joao Pedro

It does not feel as though Slot has quite got the central striker he would really like at Liverpool.

Both Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez have their qualities, but Jota is too injury prone and Nunez has been poor when stepping in for the Portuguese.

Consequently, it is starting to feel probable that Liverpool will be looking at someone new to lead the line over the next six to 12 months.

Pedro has emerged as a candidate for that, having scored 24 goals since arriving at Brighton for around £30m in 2023. And speaking on The Redmen TV, journalist Paul Gorst has outlined that the Brazilian may be one to keep an eye on.

“I think first and foremost Liverpool have a good relationship with Brighton from the way they handled the Mac Allister deal, it was all done very amicably and in-house and in the ‘right way,'” says Gorst.

“James Milner and Adam Lallana going the other way as well. So, I think that’s a good one to outline first.”

“If they do feel a new striker is needed there are a few options of course. But Joao Pedro is I’m sure someone who they are looking at and thinking ‘he’s doing well,’ they’ll certainly keep an eye on him.

“The question is what does a number nine look like under Arne Slot.”

Brighton want £100m for Joao Pedro

As Gorst says, there are reasons to believe that a Liverpool move for Pedro would make a lot of sense.

The only sticking point here would likely be the 23-year-old’s asking price.

While Liverpool may have a good working relationship with Brighton, the Seagulls do not sell their players on the cheap.

They may also feel that they owe the Reds one having been forced to sell Mac Allister to them for just £35m because of a release clause in 2023.

And RTK understands that Brighton have already slapped a £100m valuation on Pedro ahead of anticipated interest in him.

The Seagulls have proven that they will stick to their guns on such asking-prices, which may force Liverpool to look elsewhere.
