Trent Alexander-Arnold has been in fine form for Liverpool and England this season.

The 26-year-old has been one of the first names on the team sheet and recently returned from a hamstring injury he sustained in the 2-0 win against Aston Villa.

While he’s one of the best players in the world creatively, Alexander-Arnold has often come under scrutiny for his alleged defensive frailties.

And Alexis Mac Allister has shared what he really thinks about the Liverpool vice-captain in this regard.

Alexander-Arnold produced a fantastic display for Liverpool against Newcastle United as he came on as a second-half substitute to provide two assists for Mohamed Salah.

He also held his ground quite well against Anthony Gordon, who was giving Jarell Quansah a hard time in the first half.

When quizzed by Gary Lineker about the Liverpool defender, Mac Allister described him as an ‘amazing’ player who can more than hold his own defensively.

“I think everyone can see the quality,” said Mac Allister on the Rest is Football podcast.

“Like he’s amazing on the ball. I know there was a lot of talk about his defensive side, but I think he’s amazing as well. I think he’s an amazing player.”

Eddie Howe also praised Alexander-Arnold for his cameo against Newcastle, describing him as a player who was very difficult to stop despite preparing for the threat he posed.

What does the future hold for Alexander-Arnold?

Liverpool face a race against time to renew the 26-year-old’s contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

Real Madrid want to sign Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer at the end of the season, which would be a big blow for the Reds.

There haven’t been too many developments in terms of his future – with Liverpool also in talks to renew Virgil van Dijk and Salah’s contracts – but the coming weeks will be crucial for the Reds as they have their work cut out for them to retain arguably three of their most important players.
