Liverpool are in a race against time to tie Virgil van Dijk to a new contract, with the defender’s deal due to expire in the summer.
The Dutch international is one of three Liverpool superstars currently set for free agency at the end of this season, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah also on course to leave for nothing in June.
With Salah sending constant messages to Liverpool about his future, there’s a growing chance that the Egyptian international could remain at Anfield beyond this season, though Alexander-Arnold looks more likely than ever to join Real Madrid.
And for Van Dijk, there has been a promising update on the defender’s situation at Liverpool.

Van Dijk can picture extending Liverpool stay despite rejecting contract
According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Van Dijk can imagine staying at Liverpool beyond this season, even after reports from the Athletic that a concrete offer from the Reds for the defender fell short of expectations.
Plettenberg posted: “As reported, Liverpool remain Virgil van Dijk’s primary point of contact as the 33 y/o legend can really imagine to stay beyond this season Now he has received a concrete offer from Liverpool as per The Athletic. Several top clubs are interested but Liverpool with good chances.”

With Alexis Mac Allister stating he wants Van Dijk to stay at Liverpool beyond this season, news that the defender can envision remaining at Anfield after this campaign is a huge boost for Arne Slot’s side heading into 2025.
And although an opening offer has been rejected, Liverpool need to find confidence to hand Van Dijk a new deal that the 33-year-old defender will find acceptable, with the Dutch international too important to be allowed to leave for nothing.

Liverpool have to be quick with new Van Dijk offer with top clubs interested
Van Dijk is one of the most exciting names potentially heading into the free agent pool next summer alongside Alexander-Arnold and Salah, with the Liverpool defender arguably the best in the world in his position.
Yet with top clubs interested in signing the Dutch international, Liverpool need to be quick to tie the defender down to a new deal, especially with Van Dijk indicating that he wants to stay beyond this season.
Indeed, Van Dijk has been a man mountain for Liverpool this year under Slot, and the Reds must be at the races to award the Anfield captain a new deal before another top side beats them to the punch heading into January.
