Liverpool moved nine points clear in the Premier League after beating Manchester City at Anfield.

The Reds knew it was big day, with the chance to jump 11 points ahead of the champions with a win.

After Arsenal moved to within six of them with a win on Saturday, focus was needed from Liverpool to keep up their brilliant form.

The Reds started brilliantly, though, with Jamie Carragher saying Liverpool did something never seen before against Pep Guardiola’s side.

After the eventual 2-0 score line, plenty of the plaudits lay at the feet of Reds boss Arne Slot.

Slot has led Liverpool to an unprecedented 18 wins in his first 20 matches in charge. And following the final whistle, former Reds striker Daniel Sturridge sang the Dutchman’s praises.

Daniel Sturridge hails ‘magnificent’ Arne Slot

Slot did something slightly different for the Reds against City.

Dropping Darwin Nunez to the bench, the Liverpool head coach played Luis Diaz through the middle, with Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah supporting him from wide.

The switch worked, with both Gakpo and Salah eventually on the score sheet and Diaz performing exceptionally.

However, speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Sturridge wanted to shine a light on what Slot did with the Liverpool midfield.

“How the manager set them up today was magnificent,” raved the pundit. “He had the midfield pressing all over the pitch, they set the intensity from the team.

“It was a really professional performance, it can get out of hand but they didn’t let that happen.”

Liverpool midfield steps up

There were a few rumblings of discontent among the fan base when the team news was released ahead of the game.

With Curtis Jones in good form at the moment, plenty of supporters were surprised to see the Liverpool academy graduate dropped for Dominik Szoboszlai.

However, Szoboszlai more than justified his place in the team with an all-action display.

Alongside the Hungarian, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch were just as important as ever as they dominated a lacklustre Man City midfield.

It may not be the press Liverpool fans became used to under Jurgen Klopp, but it’s still mightily impressive.
