How Luis Diaz is really feeling at Liverpool after claims he could reject contract

Liverpool are starting to reach the sharp end of contract discussions with some of their star players.

As the world prepares to turn the corner into 2025, the Reds are still yet to find a positive conclusion for any of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold or Mohamed Salah.

But as well as that star trio, Liverpool are also trying to spin a few other plates this winter, too.

More specifically, Liverpool are in negotiation with Luis Diaz over an extension of his current contract, which is set to end in 2027.

Diaz has been in good form this season and Rousing The Kop understands that the Reds are keen to reward his progress with a more lucrative deal.

However, reports from Colombia on Friday suggested that Diaz is not happy with the offer from Liverpool and could be tempted to leave the club instead. Speaking exclusively to RTK, journalist Graeme Bailey has explained whether there is any truth in those suggestions.

Luis Diaz still in Liverpool discussions

Rewind back to the summer, and there would have been Liverpool supporters out there willing to sacrifice Diaz.

Diaz was heavily linked with Barcelona, and the suggestion from reports in Colombia was that the option of a move to Barca could still be attractive for Liverpool’s No.7.

However, according to Bailey, there is no suggestion that Diaz has been disappointed with the way discussions are going with the Reds.

“I haven’t heard that he’s been disappointed and the contract is in the works,” says the reporter.

“Liverpool know he needs a new contract and they’ve come to the table. They’re very happy with him and I haven’t heard any negative whispers at the moment.

“I don’t think they’re letting him out in any way, shape or form,” Bailey added. “I’m told there’s no one who’s impressed Arne Slot more than him. He’s been sensational and Slot absolutely loves him.”

Luis Diaz deserves Liverpool contract

The way Liverpool often handle contracts is to offer a well-performing player a new deal one or two years after signing.

However, despite the fact that Diaz has done well since his move from Porto, he is still on the same contract he signed back in 2022.

Given that Diaz joined in January, it is now virtually three years since then.

There have been some dips in form and some injury issues along the way, but now free from any kind of fitness problems, Diaz is showing what a key player he is for Liverpool.

While he may not be in the same bracket as the likes of Van Dijk, Salah or even Alexander-Arnold, Diaz does still deserve to get a little bump for his contribution at Anfield so far. Let’s see how this continues to play out.
