Arne Slot will look to get three points on the road, but he has a handful of injury issues to deal with ahead of the game.

And the Liverpool boss provided updates on Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson Becker, among others, ahead of the trip to St Mary’s.

Alisson Becker has been ruled out with a hamstring injury for over a month now, having been substituted in Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Crystal Palace.

Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, was withdrawn in the 2-0 win against Aston Villa before the international break with a suspected hamstring problem.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the game against Southampton, Slot first confirmed that Harvey Elliott is back in full team training.

The Dutchman also suggested that Alisson and Diogo Jota don’t have a chance of being involved against Real Madrid, let alone Southampton, while Alexander-Arnold faces a race against time to face Los Blancos.

“For next week? We’ll have to wait and see because the last week is always tricky because it’s isolated to group sessions so it is difficult to judge.

“So I cannot say it will be one or two or three days. Alisson and Jota I don’t expect them to be fit for that game [Real], Trent we will see.”

What does Liverpool’s injury list look like ahead of Southampton?

Elliott is back in full team training but it remains to be seen if he’s part of the matchday squad.

Alisson, Jota and Alexander-Arnold are out, while Federico Chiesa isn’t expected to feature as he continues to work his way up to full fitness.

Virgil van Dijk, on the other hand, is fully fit and should be okay to lead Liverpool out at St Mary’s.
