Liverpool keeping tabs on £60m Premier League striker rated higher than Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko

Liverpool could be in the market for a new striker at some point during 2025.

Within Arne Slot’s favoured system of having two players for every role on the pitch, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota are the Dutchman’s current options.

However, Jota has failed to overcome his ‘injury prone’ tag after picking up yet another knock during the early part of Slot’s reign at Anfield.

Nunez, meanwhile, is still failing to full convince in-front of goal despite an improvement in his more general all-round game.

As a result, there have been suggestions that Liverpool could look to bring in a new, big money forward to play through the middle of their attack.

Sporting’s in-form hitman Viktor Gyokeres has been linked with Liverpool but according to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, there could be another striker worthy of keeping an eye on, too.

Liverpool keeping tabs on Alexander Isak

Gyokeres has been one of the most lethal strikers in Europe this season. His delightful form for Sporting has translated to the Sweden national team, for whom he has four goals in four games this term.

Able to call on Alexander Isak as well, the Swedes have a forward line which is the envy of virtually every international team on the planet.

Isak’s Newcastle future has been the subject of much discussion recently, with the 25-year-old still yet to pen fresh terms at Tyneside. And according to Bailey, Liverpool are very much ‘keeping tabs’ on Isak’s situation at St James’ Park.

“He’s one of the best strikers in Europe and he’s going to be available next summer,” Bailey exclusively predicts while speaking to Rousing The Kop.

“So, it’s one of those, why wouldn’t Liverpool be keeping tabs on him? What happens if Slot decides to get rid of Nunez, which I don’t think is beyond the realms of fantasy and suddenly says ‘I want a central striker.’ Let’s not forget how he played with Gimenez at Feyenoord.

“With Gyokeres, Isak and [Benjamin] Sesko available, FSG might just think ‘look, we have to take one of these players.’

“He’s Premier League proven and really firing,” adds the journalist. “So, I think he’s very much towards the top of a lot of lists. I’d say he’s ahead of Gyokeres on a lot of lists and certainly ahead of Sesko.”

Liverpool made to rue Alexander Isak mistake?

Liverpool were linked with Isak while he still a Real Sociedad player. The Swede eventually moved in the summer of 2022, at the same time Nunez joined the Reds.

At £60m, Isak was the cheaper of the two players and has comfortably outscored Liverpool’s No.9 ever since.

Nunez’s 36 goals may only be four behind Isak’s tally of 40 in the two-and-a-bit years since they both moved to England.

But while the Uruguayan has played 110 times for the Reds, Isak has appeared a full 32 games less than that. 40 goals in 78 games is a terrific record.

Nunez obviously gives Liverpool a lot more than just goals and no one should really be regretting the gamble that was taken on the 25-year-old.

But, if they’d had their chance again, it would be interesting to see whether Liverpool would do the same again. Almost three years on, perhaps they’ll yet get a chance to correct what could be seen as a serious transfer mistake.
