Chris Sutton says he saw Arne Slot do something to the Liverpool fans for the first time after beating Aston Villa

Liverpool supporters have every right to be feeling pleased with themselves at the moment.

The Reds have started the season in blistering form, shooting to the top of the Premier League and Champions League tables.

Arne Slot deserves an enormous amount of credit for the way he has steered his new team into an excellent position.

It is still early days, of course, and few at Anfield will be getting carried away.

However, there’s no question that Slot has exceeded all expectations after replacing Jurgen Klopp over the summer.

Klopp was adored on Merseyside and rightly so. But having navigated such an excellent start to the Premier League season, it now looks as though Slot is starting to write his own legacy.

Arne Slot building connection with Liverpool fans

Slot is a very different personality to Klopp. While the new Liverpool head coach is all about calmness and control, the old manager loved a bit of chaos.

Nevertheless, Slot has already won over the Reds fans in his own right. Winning games certainly helps with that.

And although some are surely missing Jurgen’s trademark fist-pumps in-front of the Kop after a win at Anfield, Slot is quietly making those memories fade.

Speaking to BBC 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, pundit Chris Sutton has claimed that he saw a ‘connection’ between Slot and the fans on the Kop for the first time after Saturday’s win over Aston Villa.

“After the game he [Slot] did go over to the Kop, it was the first time I’d seen him go over in that sort of way,” Sutton said.

“There was a connection before but where they’d, not necessarily not accepted him, they’d accepted him but, you know, Klopp was a chest-beater going over after games and what have you.

“But there seemed to be a connection and that respect there that it’s a good start, Liverpool fans are very knowledgeable, but that’s all it is.”

Liverpool supporters not getting carried away

Sutton has hit the nail on the head with his assessment of where Liverpool fans see Slot right now.

It was indeed nice to see the Dutchman approach the Kop with a smile on his face at full-time against Villa. He had every right to be pleased with himself.

However, it’s also true that Slot’s refusal to get carried away himself is helping with his overall image.

Had he come in fist-pumping all four corners of Anfield at every opportunity, it would have felt forced and insincere.

That he’s instead built his connection slowly and in his own way has made the process feel all the more natural and has given fans the chance to get used to the idea of Slot as their boss.

As he continues his journey at Anfield that connection will only grow and grow. It has been a wonderful start in every respect for Arne and the best is yet to come.
