Liverpool player told he had a ‘nightmare’ performance against Brighton in the Carabao Cup

Liverpool have every right to be pleased with their win over Brighton in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup fourth round clash.

The Reds headed to the South Coast for the first of a double header against Fabian Hurzeler’s in-form side.

Arne Slot heavily rotated his Liverpool team as he contends with a hectic schedule over the next few weeks.

It was always likely to be an understrength XI at the Amex and so it proved. Liverpool’s fixtures dictate that Slot needs to find a balance between resting players and staying competitive.

The Liverpool head coach found that equilibrium on Wednesday, as his much-changed team held out for a 3-2 win.

But on the eve of Halloween, one of Slot’s changes has unfortunately been told that he suffered a ‘nightmare’ evening at Brighton.

Jarell Quansah suffers Brighton ‘nightmare’

Slot was pleased with Liverpool’s performance against Brighton, mostly because of how cohesive his rotated team often looked.

One of the players the boss chose to highlight after the game was centre-back Jarell Quansah.

Quansah was making just his third start of the season so far, featuring alongside Joe Gomez in the Liverpool defence.

For most of the evening the 21-year-old was fine. However, a sloppy backwards pass led to Brighton’s first goal on 80 minutes, before his deflection took the ball past Vitezslav Jaros for the Seagulls’ second.

Slot expressed sympathy for Quansah after the game and speaking to LFCTV, former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie did the same.

“Talk about nightmares, young Jarell Quansah, you have to feel sorry for him a little bit,” said Gillespie.

“Up until the mistake he made he’s played an exceptional game.”

When will Jarell Quansah get another chance?

The cruellest thing about Quansah’s disappointing evening at Brighton is that it may well stay in his system for a while.

The Liverpool academy graduate has always seemed like a player who is by and large unflappable.

But his only previous two appearances this season have seen him hauled off at half-time against Ipswich and score an own goal when West Ham came to Anfield.

Add this late game meltdown to the pile and you could understand if Quansah is feeling low on confidence.

With Ibrahima Konate playing so well next to Virgil van Dijk, it seems unlikely that the youngster will play again until well after the November international break. Head up, Jarell.
