Ally McCoist gives verdict on whether Darwin Nunez can replace Diogo Jota for Liverpool

Darwin Nunez has featured regularly for Liverpool in recent weeks with Diogo Jota currently out injured with a rib injury.

Arne Slot confirmed last week that Jota is out indefinitely with the Portuguese international unlikely to feature again for Liverpool before the November international break, opening the door for Nunez to make a huge claim for himself in the striker position.

With Slot suggesting that Nunez will get more minutes in coming games, the £64m signing from Benfica could see make or break his Liverpool career depending on how the Uruguay international performs for the Reds.

And Ally McCoist has now given his verdict on if Nunez is good enough to replace Jota.

McCoist urges Nunez to improve if he’s to replace Jota at Liverpool

Speaking on talkSPORT, the Scottish pundit highlighted how Nunez has to improve if he’s to show to Liverpool fans and Slot that he can rival Jota for the starting striker position for the Reds this season.

With just two goals in all competitions for the South American talisman this campaign, the 25-year-old attacker simply has to be showing more if he’s to win the favour of Slot, even with Gary Neville impressed with Nunez’s performance against Arsenal.

McCoist said on if Nuenz can step up in Jota’s absence for Liverpool: “Listen, Arne Slot’s only stating the obvious there. Jota’s a terrific player. You could argue Jota’s one of the best finishers. I think he’s a terrific player, I really do.

“So, you’re going to miss him and you’re going to say you miss him. That’s natural. Nunez should look at it as an opportunity that he has to take. He did well with the equalising goal at the weekend but he needs to get his goal tally up and he needs to show a better level of finishing.”

Nunez has to show he be trusted to lead Liverpool’s attack

Liverpool have a huge spell coming up in the Premier League with big ties against the likes of Aston Villa and Manchester City as well as relegation-threatened Southampton.

And for Nunez, the striker knows that this period of the season will be decisive in how his Liverpool career pans out, with the Uruguay forward aware that he needs to perform in upcoming games.

Indeed, time is running out for Nunez to become the main man for Liverpool, and showing he can be a regular goalscorer with Jota out injured will be key in the 25-year-old proving his worth with the Reds.
