Gary Neville blown away by ‘perfect’ Darwin Nunez moment for Liverpool against Arsenal

Liverpool faced up a really tough Premier League test on Sunday as they headed to take on Arsenal.

The Reds don’t have the best recent record against the Gunners having failed to beat them in the league over the last two seasons.

But amidst an excellent run of form, Liverpool perhaps felt as though they could get something from Mikel Arteta’s side.

For much of the game, that had looked unlikely. After conceding early from Bukayo Saka, the Reds levelled soon after, Virgil van Dijk getting the goal.

Mikel Merino nodded Arsenal back in front just before half-time, though, and in truth Liverpool could argue little about being behind.

The Reds continued to look a little wayward for much of the second-half, until a brilliant moment saw Mohamed Salah level things once again. And according to Gary Neville, the goal owed much to Darwin Nunez.

Gary Neville praises Darwin Nunez

Nunez had a difficult afternoon for much of Sunday’s game in North London.

With Diogo Jota injured, it was a real chance for Nunez to stake his claim as Liverpool’s long-term starting striker.

Up until the last minutes of the game, though, the 25-year-old did not necessarily do that.

Pat Nevin noticed Nunez looking frustrated as he failed to get into the game in the first-half, and the second wasn’t too much better.

But then, a ball down the line from Trent Alexander-Arnold. Nunez showed his pace to get on the end of it and square for Salah who did the rest.

It was a stunning goal out of nowhere and commentating for Sky Sports, Neville hailed the composure from Liverpool’s No.9.

“At times his [Alexander-Arnold’s] passing hasn’t been right but he’s world-class on the ball,” said Neville.

“There’s space in behind and it’s a really good moment for Darwin Nunez this. So often he doesn’t find the right pass but it’s perfect for Salah.”

Who starred for Liverpool against Arsenal?

This really was a good moment for Nunez. As Neville points out, he’s so often a little too rash when faced with moments such as the one at the Emirates.

But with Salah up for support, Darwin took his time and laid it on a plate for the Egyptian.

It was comfortably Liverpool’s best moment of a game in which they really good have done a little more.

The midfield in particular was too easily bypassed too many times, while as Neville says, Alexander-Arnold’s passing was all over the place at times.

In that landscape, Nunez probably ended the game as one of Liverpool’s better players. Kostas Tsimikas was also good when he came on, while Van Dijk and Konate stood up strong, too. 2-2 was not a perfect result for the Reds, but we’ll take it and Nunez played his part.
