Liverpool could be set for an interesting year in the transfer market after a steady 2024.
The Reds signed only Federico Chiesa over the whole calendar year, meaning there could be plenty of work to be done in 2025.
Exactly how much there is to do will depend on the outcomes of the contract situations around Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
But no matter what happens with that star Liverpool trio, it feels likely that Arne Slot is going to have to add a new forward player to his Liverpool squad.
Darwin Nunez has been told he’s in last chance saloon and with Diogo Jota’s injury record simply not improving, the Reds could look to the striker’s market.
With that in mind, German journalist Florian Plettenberg delivered an interesting Tuesday update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres.

Liverpool in for Viktor Gyokeres
Gyokeres has been an absolute goal machine ever since arriving at Sporting from Coventry in 2023.
The Swedish striker has hit an unbelievable 57 goals in 64 games for the Portuguese side.
After 43 goals in 50 matches last season, Gyokeres has stepped things up again in 2024/25. In just 14 games the 26-year-old has scored 14 times.
His remarkable form already saw Liverpool linked with a big money move for Gyokeres last summer.

But while it always felt unlikely that the Reds would spend such a large sum on a central striker back then, Plettenberg says that Gyokeres now has an agreement in place with Sporting which could see him leave for around £58m.
“Been told despite a release clause set at €100m [£83m], there is an agreement that Viktor Gyokeres can leave Sporting CP next summer for €60-70m [£50-58m],” he says.
“A move in the winter is currently not planned. A transfer in the summer is very likely. In England, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea are specifically interested in the 26 y/o.
“All of the teams are informed about the transfer agreement. 18 goals and 7 assists this season yet. Top striker.”
Viktor Gyokeres could be the answer for Liverpool
Slot confirmed on Tuesday that Jota is set to be out injured until at least after the November international break.
Couple that with Nunez’s failure to hit top speed so far this season and it’s fairly clear that Liverpool could do with a new, undisputed starting striker.
Given his goal scoring exploits in Portugal eclipse even that of Nunez, it’s possible that Gyokeres could be that man.
Omar Marmoush is another linked with Liverpool and the Egyptian has had a similarly excellent start to the campaign.
But for a top price of £58m, you won’t find a better goal getter in Europe than Gyokeres. There is competition there and if Nunez catches fire then maybe Liverpool don’t need him. But this super Swede is certainly one to keep an eye on.
