England returned to winning ways on Sunday night with a 3-1 victory against Finland, with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the scoresheet.

The Liverpool defender’s free-kick secured all three points for the Three Lions as Alexander-Arnold won praise from the English media for his performance in Helsinki, where the 25-year-old played at left-back for Lee Carsley’s side.

With Alexander-Arnold’s display against Greece last week for England underwhelming, the Liverpool star was back to his best on the weekend with an impressive showing against Finland with the Premier League back in action this week.

And Alexander-Arnold managed something for England no Liverpool player has done in over 30 years.

Alexander-Arnold the first Liverpool player to score a free-kick for England since John Barnes

Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick goal not only secured the win for England, but it also gained the Liverpool defender a little bit of history as the fullback became the first Red to score from a set-piece since Anfield legend John Barnes in 1993.

With four England goals to his name, Alexander-Arnold could see his tally increase in upcoming fixtures with the right-back showing he can be an immense threat from dead-ball situations, a fact Liverpool fans have known for quite some time.

Indeed, with Alexander-Arnold being tested out as a left-back, there’s a real chance that the Liverpool defender could become a staple for England no matter who is appointed the next manager of the Three Lions.

And with Alexander-Arnold impressing against Finland and now making history for Liverpool players representing England, the defender’s standing with the international set-up has only increased, with the fullback looking undroppable at this point.

Alexander-Arnold will want to increase his England goal output

As a fullback, Alexander-Arnold is already playing an outfield position that is known for how few goals they score except for rare profiles who take penalties and act more like wingers than defenders.

Yet for England, Alexander-Arnold knows he can increase the amount of goals he scores after the success of this international break, with the Liverpool star a prime candidate to take direct free-kicks.

And having starred against Finland, Alexander-Arnold will be eager to add to his tally of four heading into the November international break, where the defender can again make a claim for himself as one of England’s undroppable players.
