Diogo Jota reveals which league he would love to play in after leaving Liverpool

Liverpool fans could soon be forced to watch some of their favourite players turn out in the colours of other clubs.

The Reds have lost a number of iconic stars over recent years as Jurgen Klopp’s famous team continues to dismantle.

But while losing the likes of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Jordan Henderson stung, nothing will compare to the hurt it will cause to see Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and especially Trent Alexander-Arnold play for someone other than Liverpool.

Nevertheless, that could become a reality soon enough. All three icons are out of contract at Anfield at the end of the season.

Beyond that, there have also been suggestions that Alisson Becker could leave for Saudi Arabia, while the club’s longest serving player Joe Gomez may also be on the move.

Of course, ultimately, every Liverpool player will one day leave the club. And Diogo Jota has now been publicly looking ahead to what might come next for him.

Diogo Jota hoping for Portugal return

Jota is already into his fifth season with the Reds. Given the current make-up of the Liverpool squad, that makes him one of the team’s longer-serving players.

Despite that, Jota is still yet to turn 28. With a contract set to run at Anfield until 2027, the former Wolves man isn’t likely to be going anywhere just yet.

Before he arrived at Liverpool for £45m, Jota had had a slightly nomadic career. By the age of 20 he’d already come through at Pacos de Ferreira, joined Atletico Madrid, been loaned out to Porto and then joined Wolves.

Having found a home with the Reds, though, Jota is clearly settled on Merseyside.

Speaking via Portuguese outlet Record while away with his national team this week, however, Liverpool’s No.20 was asked whether he would like to come back to Portugal and win the Primeira Liga.

“Yes,” answered Jota. “Returning is something that I would say doesn’t make much sense now, but in the future I don’t rule out the possibility.

“It will depend on my level and the combination of factors that have to align. At this stage, I would say that in the future I would like to return.”

Liverpool looking for new Diogo Jota competition?

So far this season, Jota has been involved in a battle with Darwin Nunez to be named Arne Slot’s starting central striker.

More often than not, the Portuguese has won that head-to-head. For the moment, Jota has the shirt.

And according to reports this week, it could be that the former Wolves man is close to seeing Nunez’s challenge off for good.

Journalist David Lynch has claimed that Liverpool are likely to sell Nunez if he can’t break the starting XI this season. As that currently looks unlikely to happen, the feeling is that the Reds will ship him off next summer.

If that happens, it feels probable that Liverpool will look to bring in someone else to challenge Jota for his starting spot. Who that ultimately ends up being could decide how quickly Jota is looking for a return to Portugal.
