Whether Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is really trying to buy French club Nantes

There are plenty of rumours currently surrounding Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Reds are still yet to offer Alexander-Arnold a new contract and with his deal set to end next summer, things are getting a bit tetchy.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James has claimed that Arne Slot has got things exactly right regarding Alexander-Arnold, as well as the other two Reds stars with contract problems.

However, the general consensus is that things need to get sorted quickly with the Liverpool academy graduate.

Real Madrid are said to be circling Alexander-Arnold and there is a real worry that the pull of the European champions could convince Trent to leave his boyhood club.

In the meantime, though, some strange rumours about what Alexander-Arnold is planning off the pitch started to circulate on Friday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is not buying Nantes

Alexander-Arnold is an active footballer away from his day job.

The Scouser proudly set up The After Academy in April 2023, a programme designed to give career opportunities to young players who find themselves dropped from academy systems.

Alexander-Arnold is also a minority shareholder in Formula 1 team Alpine F1. He’s got his fingers in a few pies.

And according to French outlet L’Equipe on Friday, Alexander-Arnold is now looking at doing something else in his spare time, too.

They bizarrely claim that Liverpool’s No.66 is plotting an £84m takeover move to own Ligue 1 side Nantes.

Trent has reportedly held interest in buying Saint Etienne and Le Havre in the past but is said to have ‘set his sights’ on Nantes who could be up for sale.

It is a peculiar story indeed, which has immediately grabbed the attention of the media.

However, according to journalist James Pearce, it is simply not true. Taking to X on Friday morning, the journalist diffused talk of Alexander-Arnold’s takeover bid.

“Told this is not true,” Pearce says, in response to a post about the story.

What about Alexander-Arnold’s contract?

This is a truly strange story. If there is no truth to it at all, then you really have to wonder where on earth it has come from.

From Liverpool’s point of view, it is perhaps more unwanted distraction as they attempt to sort out Alexander-Arnold’s new contract.

As the days, weeks and months tick on, the fanbase will be growing increasingly concerned that things are not nailed down.

For the time being, though, nothing appears to be imminent at all. There could be an announcement out of nowhere, perhaps, as Liverpool did with Mohamed Salah in 2022.

But unless that happens, it appears that Reds fans could be in for a long and nervous wait. At least, one rumour about an overseas move for Trent has been put to bed, let’s now hope for another one as soon as possible.
