Stephen Warnock says Cody Gakpo was left ‘furious’ with £41m Liverpool star in 3-1 win vs AC Milan

Liverpool manager Arne Slot got off to the perfect start in the Champions League as he guided his side to a 3-1 win over AC Milan.

The match at the San Siro did, however, start in the worst possible fashion for Liverpool, who went behind after just three minutes.

But goals from Anfield defensive duo Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk helped produce a first-half comeback from Christian Pulisic’s opener.

Konate starred for Liverpool, who added a third in the second half through Dominik Szoboszlai, much to the delight of the travelling fans.

It could, however, have been more for Slot and the Reds had they been more clinical in the final third, with the attackers failing to find the target.

Cody Gakpo furious with Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota against AC Milan

Mohamed Salah was unlucky as he struck the crossbar twice, but the best chance fell at the feet of £41million attacker Diogo Jota, who slid an effort wide just before the half-hour mark.

The much better option was to slide the ball into the path of Cody Gakpo, who according to former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock was hugely angered by his teammate.

“It is greedy, not good enough from Jota, he has to square,” Warnock said on BBC Radio 5 Live (8.29pm, 17 September). “Gakpo is furious.”

Cody Gakpo gives Arne Slot selection headache after Champions League win

At the end of the day, the miss from Jota and indeed his selfishness in the box after a nice team move from Liverpool didn’t matter.

But it is an issue that Slot may perhaps look at on the training ground, with the Reds more often than not unable to afford such costly misses.

The hosts did, however, make it easy for Slot’s men at times, with Paul Merson shocked by AC Milan’s performance.

It represents a fantastic win on the road for the Merseyside club, with the manager having needed a positive result after the fiasco against Nottingham Forest.

Slot certainly has plenty of big decisions to make for the next outing against Bournemouth, particularly in the final third as Cody Gakpo shone and Federico Chiesa appeared from the bench for his debut.

Gakpo undoubtedly deserved a goal in Italy thanks to his eye-catching display, although he did fortunately manage to grab an assist for Szoboszlai’s goal.
