Clarence Seedorf gives interesting prediction about whether Virgil van Dijk will stay at Liverpool

After a very positive start to the season, some cracks have started to appear for Liverpool.

The Reds got off to the perfect beginning under Arne Slot. Three games were won without conceding a single goal, with a trouncing of Man United at Old Trafford throw in, too.

But Saturday’s defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield brought a juddering halt to Liverpool’s excellent post-Jurgen Klopp bounce.

Now, with the sting of an unexpected loss, there has been more light shed on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential exit to Real Madrid.

And with Alexander-Arnold weighing up his options, the fact that Virgil van Dijk also has less than a year left on his contract is coming into shaper focus.

While results are rosy in football, things like the current contract situations of Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah don’t seem to matter as much.

With positivity abound, the feeling that all three will commit to fresh terms with the Reds had appeared stronger than ever.

However, it’s amazing how one loss can change the landscape. With a negative feeling now enveloping the fanbase for the moment, the contract issues become a stick with which to beat FSG and the club.

Despite that, there is still time for Liverpool to get things sorted with all three of their star players.

And according to Netherlands legend Clarence Seedorf, it would ‘not be a surprise’ if Van Dijk did ultimately end up staying with the Reds.

“Everything can happen, right, at this stage of a career,” Seedorf told TalkSPORT (8.40am 17/09/24).

“You can expect him to leave, but I would also not be surprised if Liverpool would try to keep him because, you know, experience, you can’t buy that easy.

“He is still very fit, so let’s see what’s going to happen at the end of the season.”

Virgil van Dijk reacts to Nottingham Forest loss

Van Dijk will have been as disappointed as anybody following Saturday’s 1-0 loss against Forest.

As Seedorf points out, the 33-year-old is still as fit as ever and hasn’t missed a minute of Liverpool’s opening four games.

As captain, Van Dijk will take the responsibility for the defeat, even thought it had little to do with his own shortcomings.

And while many of his teammates stayed quiet after the poor result, Van Dijk did speak out on social media.

Added to the things that Seedorf mentions, the fact that Liverpool’s No.4 is still the true leader of their first-team squad should make a new contract a no-brainer. Let’s hope for some positive updates surrounding this soon.
