Scottish national media disappointed with what Liverpool defender Andy Robertson did against Poland

The first Liverpool players have been in action during the September international break.

With the Reds enjoying such a good start to the season, the pause in domestic play has come at a frustrating time.

Nevertheless, it’s always interesting to see how those members of the Liverpool squad picked to play for their countries get on.

This time, it’s Nations League action in Europe and World Cup qualifiers elsewhere. Alexis Mac Allister got a goal for Argentina while Diogo Jota and Conor Bradley got wins, too.

It was not such a good night for everyone, though. Andy Robertson and Scotland were dealt a sucker punch, losing 3-2 to Poland after conceding a 97th minute penalty.

Andy Robertson puts in ‘below par’ display

Robertson has had a really good start to the campaign for Liverpool. Although he spent most of pre-season injured, the 30-year-old has instantly come back into the siede.

Robertson has spoken about being ‘pain free‘ for the first time in a long time and while he struggled through international breaks last season, he appears at full fitness for now.

That resulted in a full 90-minute display on Thursday, as Scotland faced Poland in the Nations League Group A.

It didn’t start well for the Scots, Sebastian Szymanski firing Poland into the lead after just eight minutes. From there, things unravelled a little.

Robertson gave away what the The Scotsman call a ‘needless’ penalty to allow Robert Lewandowski to put the Poles 2-0 up.

Though Scotland roared back to equalise in the second-half, a 97th minute spot-kick from Nicola Zalweski broke their hearts right at the end.

According to The Scotsman, it was little more than Robertson deserved. His five out of 10 score was given after the Liverpool man ‘struggled to recover’ from his penalty concession.

The Glasgow Times were a touch kinder on Robbo, scoring him a six out of 10. However, they too note that the left-back was far too often ‘below par’ in his delivery, barring one ball for Scott McTominay which was supposedly ‘right on the money.’

Who is in action on Friday?

With four Liverpool players already putting in shifts for their countries on Thursday, there’s potential for only one to play on Friday.

Ibrahima Konate will be hoping to win back his place in France’s starting XI as they take on Italy in Paris.

Konate has been back to his best so far this season and after failing to play a single second at Euro 2024, he’ll be hoping that that has been enough to get back in the side.

Although no other Liverpool stars are playing on Friday, both Alisson Becker and Luis Diaz will feature in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Brazil play Ecuador in what is a 2am kick-off, while Colombia get underway against Peru at 2.30am.
