£21m midfielder suggests he’s open to joining Liverpool if their interest turns concrete

Liverpool’s failure to land a new defensive midfielder this summer will see the saga rumble on until the next transfer window.

The Reds had looked primed to finally sort the most pressing issue within their first-team squad when they pushed to get Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.

However, after Zubimendi turned them down, Liverpool had no alternative. Instead, Arne Slot has turned to the reborn Ryan Gravenberch to do the job in the early part of the season.

While Gravenberch has been a revelation so far, though, it has been claimed that Liverpool are still looking for the perfect midfielder to come into the side.

Although there have been suggestions that the Reds could come back in for Zubimendi in January, another midfielder may just have thrown his name into the hat.

Morten Frendrup addresses Liverpool interest

Zubimendi was not the only midfielder linked with plugging the glaring gap in the Liverpool squad this summer.

Alan Varela was said to be in Liverpool’s sights right towards the end of the transfer window, but a move never materialised.

Another player to be suggested as a possible option was Genoa’s Morten Frendrup. Frendrup was linked with Liverpool in July after an excellent season in Serie A.

However, according to the player himself, the interest from Anfield was never ‘concrete.’ Speaking to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, Frendrup suggests that if the Reds do ever firm up their approach, then it is a move that would interest him.

“I’m very happy for Liverpool,” said the 23-year-old, reportedly with a smile.

“Obviously, it is a huge club, but there is a long way from interest to concrete. For me, it’s about doing it as well as possible. So everything else has to be taken care of by my agent.

“I am super happy to be in Genoa,” Frendrup adds. “I feel that it is a really good place to be, where I can develop and get a lot of playing time. It was not in my consideration to change this summer.

“It’s always nice to have interest, but it’s about doing it as well as possible, and then we’ll see what it brings.”

Morten Frendrup is one to watch for Liverpool

As Liverpool continue to look for the right player to supplement Slot’s midfield, Frendrup is well worth keeping an eye on.

The Dane would perhaps not be the type of player who could instantly come in and improve the team, a la Zubimendi, but Frendrup potentially has an even higher ceiling.

At just 23, Frendrup has played almost 200 senior games and has also now been called up to the full Denmark squad.

Primarily a more defensive midfielder, the former Brondby man is a little more dogged than someone like Zubimendi, but still has quality on the ball.

According to Italian outlet TuttomercatoWeb, Frendrup could potentially be available for around £21m, too. That could represent a real bargain for Liverpool and this is certainly one to watch.
