Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing a £20m-rated midfielder who is also believed to be wanted by Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

The Reds have made signing a central midfielder a top priority this summer, with Adrien Rabiot linked with a move to Anfield, though Manchester United could be about to beat Liverpool the French international, much to Arne Slot’s dismay.

With the Premier League season only a few weeks away, time is running out for Liverpool to sign a new midfield maestro, something that is of the utmost importance having lost Thiago Alcantata this summer, with Curtis Jones also injured in pre-season.

And Liverpool could soon move for a rumoured target.

Liverpool eye Genoa maestro Morten Frendrup alongside Aston Villa

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Liverpool are interested in signing Danish youth international Morten Frendrup, with Unai Emery’s Villa also keeping tabs on the 23-year-old midfielder.

As per the report, Frendrup has an asking price worth €25m (£20m), though Genoa view the former Brondby star as ‘unsellable’ in this window, with the youngster playing a key role for the Italian side over the last three years.

With Liverpool in need of a new midfielder, though, the Reds could test Genoa’s resolve with an opening offer for Frendrup, especially with the Dane’s asking price as low as £20m and with a Premier League rival in Villa in the race as well.

Indeed, Frendrup has shown overt the last three seasons that he is on course to become a top central midfielder, and with Liverpool in the market for a replacement for the likes of Thiago, the Scandinavian talent could be just the ticket for the Reds.

Reds can’t afford to wait around on signing Frendrup

Frendrup has more than earned interest from the likes of Liverpool and Villa, and with the summer transfer window about to tick over into August, time is of the essence for the Reds.

With zero signings completed and one month remaining, Liverpool need to get a move on if they’re to improve their squad for the new season, with midfield an absolute priority.

And in Frendrup, the Danish youngster will do just that, with the 23-year-old adding depth and more youth to Liverpool’s midfield having lost Thiago already this summer.
