Luis Garcia gives verdict on whether Liverpool should try and keep Mohamed Salah

Despite Liverpool’s excellent start to the season, there is starting to be a slight shadow forming over the club.

The Reds have done brilliantly to win three games out of three so far his term, keeping a clean sheet in every match.

However, three of their most impressive players so far are a trio who, as things stand, are set to leave Anfield at the end of the campaign.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been terrific, Virgil van Dijk solid as ever and Mohamed Salah quite startlingly brilliant.

A goal and two assists at Old Trafford on Sunday highlighted both Salah’s importance to Liverpool and the fact that he is slated to leave in nine month’s time. The pressure is on the Reds to get this sorted.

Luis Garcia delivers Mohamed Salah contract verdict

As pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor noted after Sunday’s game, Salah looks hungry to go after the biggest prizes once again with Liverpool.

Despite turning 32 over the summer, the Egyptian is absolutely not slowing down anytime soon.

The gauntlet was thrown down by Salah on the Old Trafford pitch in more ways than one. After underlining how good he still is during the game, Mo outlined after it that he is yet to receive a contract offer from Liverpool.

Speaking on ESPN FC, former Reds player Luis Garcia added his name to the chorus calling for Liverpool to remedy this as soon as possible.

However, Garcia did also concede that Salah is at an age where you ‘have to be careful’ with any contract handed out.

“He is a player who makes a difference,” raved the Spaniard. “He is a player who in the last, I cannot even remember the year they started, he scores 25 plus goals every single season, and that’s very, very difficult to find all around.

“I am not saying in England, but in Spain, in Europe, anywhere. These days where strikers are missing, you cannot find these kinds of players.

“I think that Liverpool should think about how to keep Mo Salah for more years,” Garcia added. “Even though he is arriving to that age where you have to be careful.”

How long should Liverpool offer Salah?

While you would be hard pushed to find a Liverpool fan who does not want their club to keep Salah, it is not quite so cut and dry as it was back in 2022.

Back then, with Salah just about to turn 30, the bet was a safer one for Liverpool. With two more seasons in his legs, the Reds’ decision is slightly more difficult.

Nevertheless, there was really little risk in Liverpool offering Salah three more years, and we think a similar option should be on the table once again in the coming months.

If Liverpool give Mo until 2027, there is still every chance he remains at the peak of his powers up until then. If not, though, then there is little chance that the interest in him from Saudi Arabia will go away. Whatever happens, Liverpool will be relatively protected.

What is clear is that to let Salah walk away for nothing in this kind of form would be as poor a business – and footballing – decision as Liverpool could make.
