Club manager confirms Liverpool really did want to sign Mexico international this summer

Liverpool’s transfer window ended with just one player signed for the upcoming season.

The Reds had looked in need of doing a few bits of business over the summer market, but didn’t end up addressing much at all.

Federico Chiesa was the only player added to the Liverpool squad, with Giorgi Mamardashvili set to arrive at Anfield next year, too.

The main point of contention for Liverpool looked set to be their lack of adding a new number six to the team. But with Ryan Gravenberch doing so well this season, perhaps they will get away with it.

Away from the potential of bringing in another midfielder, though, there were claims that Arne Slot had his eye on bolstering the Liverpool front line further as well.

Liverpool tried to sign Cesar Huerta

With Chiesa now added, Liverpool’s strike force has some serious fire power this season. Even as doubt surrounds Mohamed Salah’s future, the Reds look well stocked for years to come.

Nevertheless, it’s always a good idea to try and plan for what’s to come next at a football club.

And despite the relative youth of many of their attacking options, Liverpool have reportedly been trying to future-proof their forward line even further.

Towards the end of the transfer window there were claims that Liverpool were trying to sign Mexico international Cesar Huerta.

The plan was said to be for the Reds to buy Huerta from Pumas before loaning him out to Sunderland for the season. However, Liverpool’s Huerta plan broke down when Sunderland refused to get involved.

While this sounded like a strange and unlikely arrangement, Pumas manager Gustavo Lema has now confirmed that Liverpool did want to sign the 23-year-old.

“Chino was sought by one of the best clubs in the world and that is a source of pride,” Lema said via TUDN, after losing Monday’s big game against Tigres.

“What are you going to tell people? That you have a player that Liverpool looked for? No, people want to win and that’s their right. We can’t say anything to the people.”

Liverpool will keep watching Cesar Huerta

This is a fascinating story which does not really fit in with Liverpool’s transfer strategy.

Had Huerta been a teenager breaking through the ranks, it would perhaps make sense to a degree. But the left winger will turn 24 in December. He is not really a youngster.

Despite that, there have been reports that after failing to sign him, Liverpool will keep tracking Huerta and could try again for him in January.

Whether that will again involve sending him out for a little while remains to be seen.

With all of the threat that Liverpool carry within their squad, there feels little need to add a project player like Huerta. But it sounds like he’s one to keep an eye on regardless.
